Replace the F-35 with . . . an updated Super Hornet ?

How I would like to be in the era of the radials, the supercharged V12s and jam-happy cannons.
In those days they'd be designed and put in service in 3 years, kill and get killed a lot.

Just a dream, nothing to see here. Move along please.

I'm always amazed when I look back to the era of the century-series fighters.

We'd design, build, and field supersonic fighters only to have them last a couple years in the inventory.

On the flight sciences side, they'd be fast as snot, then completely depart controlled flight with the wrong inputs.

Yeah, it was the golden age for the test pilots. The amount of configurations they tested in the amount of airplanes available then. Every month a new concept arised.

I'm not into fighters, but for me that sounds like "Let's upgrade the avionics of the Super Connie and we have the perfect 787 replacement."

The F-35 is actually a phenomenally capable aircraft -- a fact that a lot of armchair fighter pilots and acquisitions experts who don't actually have any experience in combat airpower are happy to eschew in favor of largely uneducated (but loudly shouted) criticism.

I have my complaints about the Lightning...but it is a needed tool to have in the US airpower war chest, because what we currently have is rapidly becoming irrelevant and physically used up to its design limits.

Trump is just a blowhard and I wouldn't put it past him to be making these comments just to use as leverage against LM somewhere down the road.

I'm sure it is, but I'm not sure who is presenting the false dichotomy, here. All that I see is President Cheeto making Lockheed sweat (and you know there are some well-clothed asses sweating...even with the billions already bilked there are a lot of snouts lined up at the trough, and the spigot wasn't supposed to be turned off for a long time yet.). He's made no commitments, and frankly with the great weight of Generals poised in his cabinet, I have a hard time imagining that he hasn't heard just what you're saying. But this is one spot where his terrifying unpredictability becomes an asset. He probably won't cancel...but he might. And the piggies at the top can't take that chance.

To me the false dichotomy seems to be "Well yeah, you taxpayers got royally molested again, but if you in any way question or push back against your molestation, it automatically means the program is cancelled and your kids will grow up speaking Russian."
I love watching everyone flip a poop at the first word he says on a subject. He's obviously using his pulpit to evoke certain results. And his end goal is usually nothing similar to the actual initial statements on the topic. He may not be someone I'd invite over to eat my ham on Christmas, but he is certainly not dumb.

The hell with three years, the P-51 went from concept to rollout in 102 days with nothing but human ingenuity and slide rules...

Yeah but it's first few iterations (the Apache and Allison engined Mustang) were little
Better than the P-40 it was slated to replace. It took some Brits wanting to stick the Merlin in it later to get that thing to the fighter it was supposed to be.

If only somebody could jump on here and describe the EW capabilities of the F-35...or F-22 for that matter.

In a couple of weeks, Trump will be briefed about the capabilities of the F-35 and he will probably tweet, "the F-35 is awesome, we need it, I'll try to get the taxpayers a better deal".

I'm positing that that could be exactly what President Cheeto is doing right now. God, I can't believe I'm defending this maniac...well, I'm not, I'm just proposing that he MIGHT be doing something a bit more clever than flushing the whole thing down the toilet in a fit of pique.

Put it this way: You don't walk in to a negotiation saying "Well we really have to have this thing and there's no way we can afford to cancel it now, but I'll try to get the price down".

It's funny seeing something like that when without fail in any number of these type of threads, those of us with knowledge in classified arenas has to hear dismissive blubbering by those who don't have it on why we don't back up our claims.

"I demand proof! Show it to me!"

In any normal case, sure. Sometimes, just not possible. We're not the Hillary State Department, we don't have carte blanche to play fast and loose with classified information. Funny thing, is how much that whole situation, even though she never got in trouble for anything, is causing some new headaches for those of us who do take classified information seriously, as it comes to new training/recertification emphasis items we get hammered with now.

"What's with all this extra BS in training now? She did nothing wrong, right? All of her transgressions were unintentional, so it's all good, correct? That's what congress said....."

:)

I like your post, Mike *clickedy*, but I feel at pains to point out that it's the FBI/Justice Department that are tasked with enforcing the Law in such a situation, and they are to blame (imho) for becoming corrupted. Total sidenote, though.
