Accident

Oh and they had an alternate?

There's no way the fuel numbers are going to work for 81 pax/bags on a 4hr22min flight with an alternate and whatever IFR reserves they require down there...

Guys I can't stress this enough. If you have ANY kind of issue, and you need to land ASAP, for gods sake say EMERGENCY immediately. Even if it doesn't wind up being an emergency, say it. Lots of ATC are not pilots, none are mind readers. If you're telling us you're having an issue but don't declare emergency, there's a good chance we won't think it's that serious and you have it under control. You say EMERGENCY and we will clear a path for you like Moses through the Red Sea.

Personal anecdote. My only fatality was a Be36 that ran out of gas. His initial call with a problem was "approach my power seems to be dropping for some reason". I think 2-3 minutes might have gone by before I understood the gravity of his situation. He never once declared emergency. I declared emergency for him. He went into the trees 1/2 mile short of a runway. I honestly believe had he told me EMERGENCY right away, that extra minute or two would have been enough to get him to the runway.

This!!! Saying "priority" doesn't cut it especially when things are going bad that fast. This reminds me of the Avianca accident up in NYC. It sucks that just about a whole soccer team had to be wiped out because of something as elementary as having fuel.

Ok this is apparently the FPL filed by the aircraft back at Viru Viru.

Darwin found these guys.

1,605nm > 1,600nm.

This crash really boils down to this...the math seems simple.

Without knowing the winds, the math isn't exactly that simple.

And no I'm not excusing them runnng out of gas. That's completely inexcusable and got a lot of people killed. I'm simply pointing out that range given in nautical miles could be way off depending on the winds encountered on the flight.

"At least do it for a good reason"

And unfortunately about 70ish others.

That's the shame. It tough to know who you're (as a pax) hitching your trailer to in this business. This company could employ some of the most competent mountain/avro flying guys in the world and also these two guys.

Yeah, Christ, first flight ever with the owner of the company. I think maybe a tiny bit of slack is in order.

Not that she cares.

The flight plan endurance/ ETE could be just a transposition error but still doesn't explain the poor airmanship. She earned her ratings in South Florida, and one outlet claims that up until recently she was instructing at a school in S FL. Her last entry into the FAA airman's database was over a year ago, commercial single/ multi & instrument. She did not hold a US flight instructor certificate, or type rating for the airplane. Who knows what ratings and training she received in Bolivia.

As much as I would like to think it isn't, I think it will boil down to their perceived pride and pressure to fly the team with the owner/ captain and a pretty girl in the right seat.

I know her instructor. He's not doing well. A new type wouldn't show up in the database if, indeed, it is a FAA type. But yes, image and publicity seem to have been a focus.
