I'm in initial training and new to the game. Need some OG wisdom. I was given 11/23-25 off, and I'd like to get from MSP to CHA to see some family for turkey day. Need to be back in MSP by the 26th.

I plan on hitting the terminal early thanksgiving eve, but my big fear is getting stuck in Chattanooga that friday and missing a training event.

Should I just get to the airport early 11/25? Am I being paranoid?

I'm surprised that no one has brought it up already, but I don't mine being the first.

You're in initial training, and you are new to the game. I'm assuming that means that this is your first 121 gig. Unless you know that you are a high-speed, low drag, absolutele badass, super pilot.... I, personally, would have my head in the books. A few extra days of being in the training environment without having to formally train could be the perfect opportunity to get way ahead of the curve.

It has already been mentioned that there will be many holidays in the future that will go to the wayside, get used to it early. Word to the wise, treat initial training as if your job, and future aviation employment depended on it, because guess what.

During initial training I wouldn't go anywhere except a quiet place to study.

Just my opinion. YMMV

Call Fedex and book. Guaranteed jumpseat (unless a Fedex guy bumps you out 2 hrs prior to flight. Extremely unlikely)

1376 CHA 11/26/2016 22:25L (03:25Z) MEM 11/26/2016 22:41L (04:41Z) 757-200P
1407 MEM 11/26/2016 03:36L (09:36Z) MSP 11/26/2016 05:32L (11:32Z) MD-11

That leaves 10:25pm on Nov 25 and arrives 5:32am Nov 26 into MSP.

If something else works and you get to MSP, you can always call and cancel Fedex.

No such thing. Again consider who you are giving this advice to.

?

About as close to a guaranteed thing as you can come close to for a jumpseat, save reserving online your own airline's jumpseat. Being in CHA he can always worse case do a one-way car rental to MEM, and just hop on any of the Fedex flight nonstop to MSP. I've taken Fedex many times and have never once been bumped off. Have been bumped off many passenger carriers though.

Good advice.

There's nothing more blissful than being ahead of your classmates, relaxed and not fresh from a non-rev nightmare in class.

Plus, the quicker you can transition your people over to the world of "Thanksgiving is when we have it, and Christmas is going to be on the 23rd some years", the better.

Buy a ticket. Use the peace of mind to study.

Or stay, relax, study and recharge for training.

Being on the road during the holidays sucks, but I've had more than one "Chinese Turkey" in MSP during the holidays.

Non-revving, on probation, during the busiest travel days of the year, during training.....ummmmmm.

while I wouldn't do it its their choice. If they do I'll help with info if I can to give them all their choices.
I'm going to tell them straight up to buy a ticket.

(That's how I went to/from home while in E75 school two years ago. Worked like a charm. No-stress express.)

You can book the jumpseat on either UPS or FedEx a few days out at least. If you book it, it's yours, it can't be taken away from you AFAIK.

FedEx is 24 hours out. Seat is pretty much yours unless you get bumped by a Check Airman or Deadhead which I understand is rare.

Fedex did change the policy that even if you have a reserved jumpseat, a Fedex pilot can still bump you out up to 2 hrs prior to departure. This was to get "in line" with all the other airline standards for jumpseating.

So the jumpseat is yours unless you get bumped by a Fedex pilot up to 2 hrs prior to departure, even if you have a prior reservation.

Still, I can't imagine many Fedex pilots literally wait til 2 hrs out to book a jumpseat. If OAL can book 24 hrs in advance, I'm sure FDX guys can do it a loot earlier.

I wish I pulled that kind of weight with the fam. I'm single no kids, the older sisters with rugrats dictate timelines at this point. One has a kid on the way that supposed to pop out just before the holiday and I feel I should be there.

I'm just starting back after 2 weeks off I used to study and get ahead. I hope to stay ahead, and if it looks like studying outweighs seeing the new nephew/niece then I'll stay.

thanks @Cherokee_Cruiser @ctab5060X @wheelsup for offering the fedex option, I'll book it early and go with that if I can't get out Thanksgiving evening.

You wouldn't suggest someone work on a brand new, one-of-a-kind electronic device, on carpet, without an anti-static mat and a wrist strap would you?
I've got to be the luckiest man in the world when it comes to ESD. "Meh, pop the cover on the carpet."

What was the two weeks off for? Sim availability?
