Umm, for a controller in the central sector (Minneapolis, Denver, Chicago), knowing their own respective fixes comes with experience. Small ones are hard to remember, but OVR and MCI are very common fixes on arrivals into very large airports like ORD, MSP, MCI, STL.

I was referring to the "same state" part but it's most likely you were talking to a trainee.
 
I met a pretty cool dude during my SkyWest interview process who was from the UK, he decided to move over to the US because it was more cost effective to gain his education and certs in the states. It is doable across the pond, but the costs are MUCH higher. He said all the fees just to use the airspace is what kills GA, kind of sad really....

Yeah I got the UK commercial license and it cost me a small fortune.
