Black United Pilots Claim Discrimination

My NH training partner was an African American woman. Zoomie grad, tanker toad. She is one sharp pilot. She got the job because she was tier 1. Me, I was the sympathy hire.

Silly boy, Marines can't fly!

Stroll the hallways and look at the new hire class photos at any airline. Hell, I could show you mine, there aren't a lot at all.

That's because there's less minorities in general getting into this business and women for that matter. It's got nothing to do with hiring standards.

Those angry white guy pilots have probably been around while and tired of living through political correctness and watching some women (Frontier/Delta) and minorities (this article)waltzing right in and suing.

I love the PC responses on here.

Yeah. You're right. Blacks and women act privileged and are lawsuit happy. I say we start a white man in aviation pilots association in protest.

I think you misread the intent of my reply, but it's all good.

My response was, in fact, to the point that "cockpit chat" says that airlines are only picking up women and minorities because, after all these years 'I can't get hired because of". But when you see the other side of the coin, there really aren't many of either in the business, but certainly more than 20 years ago.

But the internet says… :)

Did you see the word "some " in my post? Nothing wrong with being tired of the whining and lawsuits.

That's why we have a court system to see if the allegations have merit.

If someone claimed discrimination at my local grocery store against Hmong refugees, at least let him have their day in court.

Not to stir, I mean from a purely factual standpoint. United had an issue back in the day (80s/90s or so) when they lost some lawsuit under EEOC and through a decree had to hire (more) minorities.

Yeah, I think so. Then they went on a minority hiring spree back in the mid to late 90s. IIRC, it created a big fiasco when a number of United pilots and the union began questioning the qualifications of these individuals after one almost crashed a fully loaded 747 climbing out of SFO when it experienced an engine failure.

(I'm not opining one way or another, here. This is just what I remember reading. The incident happened 17 years ago.)

If she was Tier 1, she'd have been an Eagle Driver........

:)

Although seriously speaking, if she was a toad back in the day when the toads were truly and actually toads in the tanker world, that took a heck of alot of fortitude to do.

KC-135.

From what she told me, fly sorties that no one is shooting at you, stay in nice hotels and bases, no tent city crap, comparable to dozing for dollars in the civi world. That's smart, that's tier 1!

What does "toad" mean? Is that just a derogatory term for tanker drivers?

An acronym, mainly from the Cold War era.

Take Off And Die.

When KC-135s had a responsibilty sitting nuclear alert along with B-52s, FB-111As and B-1s, their job was to launch with the bombers, and pass off all their fuel to the bombers so they can go hit their targets in the USSR.

You take off, and give away all your fuel. Anywhere you try and go land at that can accomodate you, will likely be an ICBM or SLBM missile target soon.

Took some cajones to do that, knowing that.

TOAD isn't derogatory in the least......rather, it's the highest form of respect.

TANKER TOADS! I haven't heard that since the last time I mentioned "standpipe fuel" and "dial-a-nukes" during happy hour and was told "That's Classified!" and I replied, "I'm a civilian and I've probably heard more happy hour classified material than you'll ever dream about".

that's a hefty job description for a fairly innocuous acronym

Agreed. I mean, you're scrambling along with the bombers, and that's assuming you don't crash on takeoff because there's only a few seconds interval between you and the preceding jet and their wake turbulence. Then you pass off all your fuel to the bombers leaving you with about 10K or so, thus leaving you with extremely limited options of where you can divert to and land. And where you land, will likely get nuked in short order.

Here's a vid of the takeoff...in and of itself a flight safety nightmare. But when Soviet ICBMs are inbound, flushing aircraft the hell off the ground, is paramount. Order is 3 bombers, 3 tankers, 3 bombers, 3 tankers, until everyone is gone. By the 2nd jet off the ground, you're IMC on takeoff. Still badass to see, with such heavy aircraft.

Whoa.

Thanks for the explanation!

"Alright. Now listen up. I'm only gonna say this once. Clear for take off."

"Who is?"

"Everyone."
