Pretty sure that is correct. You have to ask for help before you get busted. After the fact it is all in the FAA's and your employer's hands.

I can't speak to what a specific airline policy is regarding an event like this. The FAA does not meter who is allowed into a Hims program. The FAA decides about medical and certificate action. CLEARLY the better AND easier way is to self identify and receive help. There are easier and harder ways to get yourself back to the cockpit.

I know a guy who got put in the British "Pokey" for almost a year, got released, went through HIMS and is back online.

HIMS is a great program if you have a problem. But your life will (and should) fundamentally change afterward.

With part 117 it's part possible to fly the segment unaugmented. Would make for a crappy red eye over though.

My husband is not at United but those who are married to United pilots asked this and were told that after the fact it's a done deal. But I don't know.

Relax, they were just F/Os. Who were your regional C/As two years ago. You know, back when they were only taking Tier 1s.
