I am a gold Seal CFII offering free instruction, you provide or pay for the airplane rental. I am looking to build some time toward my ATP. Currently I fly for a charter company, and available to provide instruction on my days off in the month of September and early October. Please private message me for details. Will do any instruction toward PPL, IR, CPL, CFI or CFII, flight review, IPC or if you want to brush up on some skills with a flight instructor send me a private message to make arrangements. I can provide a plane if you do not have one.

Why?

Yeah - gotta echo Mr. Cold here.

Why in the hell would you work for free?

Hey guys, I'm offering free roofing services on my days off from my full time roofing job. If you don't have a ladder and hammer I can provide one.

Do you see how silly that sounds ?

Your roofing scenario doesn't sound as silly if you do it for a month and land than land a job with a national roofing agency that gets you certifications worth 20K and lands you a job making 5 times as much as your independant roofing gig, hate the game, not the player. College grads do it all the time, working for free in tons of industries as "interns" for free to gain experience in the field they want to work and make a decent pay check one day. If a flight instructor does it for a month to get to the next level all the haters come out. Its the free market and a free county, hate America, not me.

So, eventually you want to make big money using your skills as a pilot...but right now, you're willing to give it away for free?

Excellent logic.

This is the type of attitude that companies exploit, and which undermines all of those top-tier paying jobs you're hoping to one day attain. The reason those top-tier jobs even exist is because pilots presented a unified front and forced their employers to pay them what their time, effort, and expertise are worth. If you don't value your skills yourself, how do you expect a potential employer to value them for you?

Seriously. Be a professional, not an amateur. Don't give it away in pursuit of numbers in your logbook. Have some self respect and some respect for the industry -- not hobby -- that you are hoping to be a part of.

There are plenty of perfectly respectable ways to build time, but this isn't one of 'em.

College grads who picked crappy degree programs do that, but shouldn't. Engineers, geologists, scientists, computer science, and other tech students get paid for their internships. Their skills are worth something. The skills of the other CFIs you are trying to undercut are worth something.

You're not a player if you're not getting paid, you're a wannabe.

If you lack integrity and don't value your skills enough to charge for your professional services your resume won't make it passed the phone interview. If your skills aren't solid enough that you can't get enough to flight time and keep your dignity then this job isn't for you.

Quit using cliches from bad cop movies and act like a professional.

yall are funny, I'm not giving anything away for free and don't insult my character or intelligence. You have no idea what my flying background is. No one questions when two pilots decide to time build. So let's do a math exercise , if I split an airplane with another pilot for $120 per hour we each pay $60 per hour. If that person wants me to teach them while we time build and I charge them $60 an hour for instruction then they pay for the plane and I pay nothing. It's all how you market it. There is nothing unethical about it. What is unethical are the flight schools around the U.S. That charge in upwards of $50 or more an hour and pay the instructors a third of that fee per hour. Get mad at large schools like ATP, that pay a crap hourly wage to instructors that are time hungry. I have a full time salaried job working 135 , I'm doing this on the side for 50 more hours. Not even putting a dent in the industry. Y'all are mad at the wrong person. Go on the ATP Forum and start chewing out those unethical instructors for accepting low hourly wages. Go start an instructors Union or something to change the industry as we know it. Don't get mad at some guy and his airlpane looking for 50 hrs on his off days.

It doesn't matter what your flying background is, you are a <1,500 hour pilot. Or if you are pursing the R-ATP - you have even less. You know how I know that? In your initial post of this thread you said "I am a gold Seal CFII offering free instruction, you provide or pay for the airplane rental. I am looking to build some time toward my ATP". You said free, not split a time builder and barter instruction. There is a tremendous amount of information out there on why flying for free is bad deal, here is a quick summary of how it happens and why. Whether it is time building, the opportunity to fly certain equipment or to a certain destination... All the reasons are bad. Once you give those people free instruction, they are going to ask the next flight instructor to fly for free or a reduced price because the last guy didn't charge them fair market prices. I've been in that situation, as others have. We have been on the phone or face to face with the student explaining why my rate isn't fee. It usually goes like this: "But the last guy wasn't XX dollars, he was going to an airline so did it for time." "I understand that, but I can't pay my mortgage on that. It'll be XX dollars."

Offering professional services for free is a bad idea. Go ahead and ask an electrician, plumber, attorney, landscaper, any professional of their trade about wages. Not the owner of the company, but the employee. Of course they are going to earn less than the billable wage, that is how the company generates revenue to cover the other overhead costs associated with operating the business.

50 hours isn't much time as a 135 pilot or as a professional instructor. Don't be impatient, fly another month or two at your 135 job or charge the going rate as an instructor and earn the hours and respectable wage. The S Florida flight training market isn't exactly slow, 50 hours will happen in a month or two.

The thing is, a lot of us actually fy for some of those big-time companies that you would like to work for.

Given your double-down reaction to the negative response to your offer by your fellow professional pilots, we are all left to wonder:

When's the next time you're going to offer to under-cut your fellow pilots' professional services for your own personal benefit? Will it be during the next unsafe or illegally-scheduled pairing? Will it be during contract negotiations? Will it be when we are on strike?

I'm pretty sure I actually know who you are, and if I'm right we've been in the same room more than once.

I've got a job you'd love to have and will be hiring another 500hr FO soon into a Lear.

You are giving away something for free, your integrity. You also gave away any chance had at the job.

Aviation is a small world buddy.

Jeeze, as an up and coming instructor, this irritates me. Free services are still happening in aviation? I thought those types were gone, apparently there's more than a few still left around. Way to undercut newer cfi's especially those who have families to support. Please contribute something positive to the industry, don't bring it down, don't lower the bar! If your not willing to charge for your services, don't instruct.

Folks, you can't one day extol the virtues of the Capitalist system and then the next day berate someone that is using one of its profound tenets to his advantage. And it is highly hypocritical because they only reason you are saying something is because it affects your industry.

The OP does not owe anyone any explanation or justification for his actions. No one on here is putting food on his table. And if you won't hire him because of that, so be it. You aren't the only prospective employer in town. This is a high-paying blue collar industry. As a blue collar worker, you sell your skillset to the highest bidder or one that makes fiscal sense. Professionals in the true sense of the word have a professional board not a union. And they aren't trying to fight "the man" to earn a compensation commensurate to their skill set.
