I'd do LAX737 if you're okay with goofy work hours almost every single trip (redeyes and early starts on the east coast).

If slightly faster progression and all flying done between 6AM and midnight sounds better, I'd do LAX717. Plenty of good layovers in SFO, SEA, SAN, etc. even for the most junior lineholders.

Part of this advice is because DEN-LAX is going to 5x daily 717 service in the near future and that's a lot of daily jumpseats to book in advance or ride in the galley worst case.

it's going to take all of them from skywest? I thought it was only going to be 1-2 of the 5x?

and the 737 movement is flat now.

The 737 used to be the most movement, I got in a the end of that, I'm a line holder in LAX for Aug, could just be a fluke month tho. I sat 0 reserve in NYC but now i have buddies behind me going on month 3 of reserve there. The 320 seems to be the 'new 737' in terms of movement. For LAX I'd take the 717, for SLC take the 320*

had i taken the bus like i originally wanted to, I'd have been in SLC like I wanted in June...instead I'm hanging out with the over head panel in LAX bidding SLC on every AE and not getting it.

Good info @ian thanks! 717 might be the ticket though Frenchy is attractive as well. I've heard the DEN-SLC commute is rough (lots of SkyW folks getting jumpseats) but at least it is the same time zone and only an hour flight.
 
Bid what you want, want what you bid.

Do not, I implore you, do not attempt to bid "strategically". When the music stops, and it always does in the airline business, you don't want to be stuck as the first officer plug in NYC on the 717 because you heard the massive growth was going to in LAX and you commute from Visalia and really wanted to fly the 73N (Yes, @Seggy, "73N") in SLC.

As usual, your mileage may vary!

So glad I didn't come come home "boozy" and a little upset with my coworkers on the 330 and bid mad dog else I'd be catatonic.

Granted I only did it for one month for observations and IOE but I had no issues with the SLC commute and i heard the same thing.
 
Very true @Derg learned that lesson with a quick upgrade at SkyW then commuted for 4 1/2 years to reserve. Uggh.

I mean, I'm basically going to bid Frenchy to come scare the bejusus out of you. #newhirefun

That would work, noticed there are 31 flights a day. Quite handy.

in the year+ of commuting at CPZ and now here, only 2 times i didn't get on my primary flight...now that delta started it last month it makes it even easier.

Let's do this.

I walk around on your legs and the first round is always on me. On your leg it's your decision about altitudes, directs and circumnavigating weather and if I have concerns, we'll talk about it but if I disagree with your assessment, we'll reframe and discuss it some more but if I have to override, it's nothing personal and we'll debrief that.

You're a big boy, I'm not going to micromanage you because there are a number of ways to accomplish a task, pick one and if I have questions, I'll ask.

If I do anything "creative" and you're uncomfortable or simply curious, don't hesitate to ask about it as I might be "out to lunch" and about to do something really idiotic.

We need one to taxi, #2 is your call at a time you feel is efficient and appropriate with your workload.

Anything crazy happens, I have the ECAM, I'll give you the jet. If you're scared, go land, otherwise, we'll talk about it and take appropriate measures.

That's your brief, in advance.
 
Engine starts: "At a time you deem appropriate, in the quantity of your choosing" :)
 
Oh shoot, if I have to tell a grown-assed adult to wear the uniform, as prescribed when he applied for the job he said he wanted, there's a high probability that we're dealing with some more "salient" issues. :)

I'll add,

My motto is, "I start off slow and taper off." That said, my slow can be a new hire's fast. I let them set the pace for delayed starts and checklists so they don't feel time compressed.
