Shoulder Harnesses

I've got the 5 point on from 15 prior until the debrief is complete.

Like Palm Tree said, if I'm in the seat, I'm wearing the 5 point. Granted regulation may allow people to relax on the shoulder harness but for me, if the aircraft has a 5 point, I always wore collared shirts and the full harness all the time. Shoulder harnesses rubbing on my neck just annoy me.

I think I've seen other B-24s with shoulder harnesses, although I maybe thinking of other bombers.

Trying not to further muddy Daily Pics. Just out of curiosity what is the 5 point going to do for you at FL380?

Pretty sure the FAR states harnesses only need to be used for T/O and Landing. Our checklist calls for shoulder harness/seatbelt on before start check but you see many people
put it on right before T/O and release them through 10k

The FAA has been getting a little upset with people in our company lately regarding shoulder harness usage. Mostly because people pop them off as soon as they leave the ground and also right after they have just landed and still slowing to make the turn off.

Not every airplane I fly with a 5 point goes up to FL380. The lower altitude airplanes don't have a quick release for the shoulder harness and those flights often involve intentional maneuvering not necessary for normal flight. It is just as easy to leave it on between cruise and maneuvering. It's not like I'm doing yoga and need the freedom.

Taxi, Takeoff and Landing........or if we are in continuous moderate. Other than that.....it's stowed.

FAA's advocate: lets say you had a sudden rudder hard-over, I bet you would want the 5 point harness on then.

Or just operating in the coffin corner in general.

Plus there's always BA 5390.

As long as we're talking about restraint systems...
Why do pax only have lap belts, but pilots have 5 point harnesses in commercial aircraft?

Because the pax do not have a metal dash, yoke and glass in front of their face. And, it would be a nightmare for the FAs.

If it the inertial reel type where they all buckle into one or the type where you have to put the shoulder harnesses over the male part of the lap belt?
It's the full 5 point with the round disc in the middle that retains everything. Of course pax also have trouble with the rear seat belts, specifically length adjustment.
