Hotel van tipping etiquette

Yes, not proud of the industry all of my background is in until this career change. Ethics were questionable. Pay by the room can be a good thing, if done properly. An efficient housekeeper who does a great job can actually make a lot of money. The problem is that most of these programs don't have housekeepers clock in and out, so if they have to work over eight hours, which a lot do to complete all of their rooms, they aren't being properly compensated for that. Makes you think twice about putting up a do not disturb sign simply because you think you are going to make it easier for the housekeeper...because in that model, they aren't getting paid for that room and are having to pick up another room or being shorted rooms. This isn't all hotels, but a lot of them. Sad but true.

that's sad, and a really pretty crappy system...BUUUTTTT...I refuse to enable a poor employment model with subsidization. We are guilt tripped into tipping these people because "woe is them, they make less than minimum wage, they are paid by the room, or they have to buy their own gas."

A lot of these jobs people do because they can make a lot of money...because of tips. The pay is artificially high because of tips. I mean is a pizza delivery driver really worth $16 bucks an hour? I don't think so, and that's as 4 year delivery driver.

Careful!

A lot of us dropped tens of thousands of dollars on flight training only to complain about low regional pay!

That's not quite the same, though is it? I mean one is a highly skilled occupation and the other is being able to count change back and knowing which side of the street the even number addresses are.

That is your right and choice and I won't judge you for it at all. But, housekeeping is not considered a tipped position. They aren't taxed for it like the Pizza guy is, and I guarantee that none of them make even close to what a Pizza Delivery driver does. It's always about perspective, we all have to start somewhere and make sacrifices that aren't always fair. Heck, I hear that sometimes pilots are actually tipped for good landings by some passengers. I just compliment...and say Thanks.

Oh no I understand that. That doesn't mean we should just go along with it, though, does it?

I know my views aren't very popular, and I can accept that in this case. My problem is where does it end? There are lots of occupations out there that DON'T make what they deserve. Should we tip them? Or should the "system" change? My opinion sides with the latter, otherwise what is already a ridiculous systems gets even more out of hand.

Maybe if I spent more time in hotels as a paying guest my attitude will change, but I already spend enough money just to simply do my job.

True, if you put it that way, it does turn into a real confusing mess. That is a job for HR in those professions, not for you. Because in the grand scheme of things, does anyone actually make enough money? How many people would ever admit that they are overpaid? It just isn't possible. My views are simply as a result of working in the industry, and being lucky enough to work with such amazing and hard working people. It is hard to ignore that once you have the personal aspect. So, I tip $5 a day. Yep, even for them not to clean my room because I do that myself. :biggrin:

Jeez that adds up real fast. Last month $5/day for housekeeping plus the van rides would have cost me $77 a month. lol, and I dropped a whole 4 day! That is not an expense I willing to part with.

I get where you are coming from, though, and i don't necessarily grudge it. I was the same way with Pizza delivery drivers for a while. I just got tired of it, and don't often put myself in situations where I need to tip. I don't go into sit down type restaurants often, and I never order delivery.

I love avoiding tipping situations! Not saying it is completely logical what my processes are with regard to tipping...or anything else for that matter, but that would require a completely new thread. Believe me, I want to keep some things a secret, even if it would humor all of you! :)

Service

Because America doesn't have the pride or work ethic to provide good service just because it's your job. Also I think restaurant staff shouldn't be exempt from min wage laws. I don't like subsidizing salaries. On the other hand, I always tip the bartenders at my regular haunts very well and def get preferential service because of it.
