My bad landings are gonna have more concequences!

so now we are paying for safety? Imagine if they said, "only the first class seats have floatation cussions, the peasants in the back can drown in case of a water emergency". Seems a little off to me.
 
We've had seatbelt airbags for years now. Now that is first class on our birds!
 
We've had them in the bulkhead rows of the 717 for about a year now. Unlike normal seatbelts the buckles aren't reversible and if somebody jams them in the wrong way it's normally a call to MX to get the thing unbuckled.
 
I would imagine they would have to be armed manually. Airbag is only gonna help you in an event where you know you are going down anyway.

Just think what a difference airbags would have made in the Germanwings crash. :cool:

They arm with weight in the seat and the buckle clipped together. They go off when a certain deceleration is experienced.
 

Not really, you can reference any of a long list of air disasters, both recent and long past.

Point was aircraft airbags would be useless in all but a small handful of air disaster incidents.

When air crashes are the subject, it is always too soon, no matter how long ago it took place.

The airbags in your car don't exactly make you invincible.... Should we leave those out as well?

Somehow I have always imagined that upon crashing into any large body of water, those small, smelly, stained cushions that you won't be able to hold on to for very long in the first place even if you did manage against all odds to survive, escape and make it to the surface, would be fairly useless unless someone can quickly find the cushions floating on the surface as a rough marker for where to find the bodies.

As for airbags, well I guess that might keep you alive a few moments longer rather than just experiencing an instant death, depending on the type/seriousness of the crash. I have no idea how an airbag is going to save your pelvis, legs, back/spine, neck, arms, feet, etc. from being crushed, pierced, incinerated, or disengaging from your torso, though. Hopefully, they aren't going to purchase the airbags from Takata. :D

Well, on average auto accidents are typically more survivable then plane crashes, there are just a lot more of one then the other. In cars they make more sense.

I'm sure it will just be more of a feel good factor more then anything.

Funny thing. I used to think of airbags in that "safety-cushion" sort of way. Like my car would be lined with Nerf or something if I was in an accident.

Then I was actually in a car accident where the bags deployed. Holy sheight...deafening boom, smoke in the cockpit, powder burns on the face and wrists of the driver...

It's a really, really unpleasant experience. Just the act of going through that will make you a safer driver, I think, as an aversion therapy.
 
Too-Much-Weight. Not gonna happen on any U.S. carrier. The costs far outweigh the benefit not to mention the time and money it would take for our friends over at the F.A.A. to bless it.
 
I had a guard rail jump out in front of my car from nowhere once. Driver side airbag didn't deploy but the passenger side did. I don't ever want that thing in my face.

As for the airplane airbags, I'm sure they're not intended for accidents like Germanwings but more for running off the runway. And the flotation devices, when the Ethiopian Airways plane ditched into the ocean those life vests killed more people than they saved cause they inflated them while still in the aircraft and trapped themselves.
 
Guaranteed whichever airline that puts em only in first class is going to have a nasty wrongful death lawsuit when the first substantial accident happens.
