Pilot Job Fair Tip #4,128...

The end has just started sucking more and more. It's the same 5 songs, only with a 2 minute commercial break to get you back to them.

It's just kinda sad that a place with this much heraldry in music isn't one of the best I've lived in for it today. Especially not when compared to Colorado Springs.

Those 18K pilots retiring between 2014 to 2022... that's roughly 2k per year. If the industry doesn't change, then there needs to be an equal amount of new pilots coming in.

So maybe they are able to maintain their staffing, but what about growth? Demand for air travel is just on the rise (especially if oil stays where it is) and what company would be absolutely tickled pink to simply "maintain" for SIX years straight?

I'm thinking that retirements alone are not enough to create a major supply issue, its the increased demand for air travel that will.

I'm not seeing it. Boeing is predicting 2-3% domestic airframe growth to 2034. The FAA is predicting less than 2.5% growth in airframes to 2035 (though seat-miles grows more like 3-4% owing to the trend of swapping low capacity regional jets for bigger ones). The real growth is in the Asian market, but I think the golden goose expat opportunities will soon disappear as local national captains will replace the current crop of expat CAs. This matches the ~3% domestic GDP growth. The airlines are blue chips and not enfuego tech start-ups.

The industry is seeing something it hasn't seen in some time: turn-over. I don't believe there's a shortage. Instead, I believe airlines are having to deal with turn-over in a way they haven't had to in recent memory. As a result, they are actually having to develop talent acquisition strategies that go beyond "submit in Airline Apps." This is all good for young pilots and those seeking to enter the career. Hopefully, mechanisms to make career entry easier and less costly are developed. 5% job growth is positive, but hardly ranks as a shortage. Want to see a real shortage: try finding a primary care physician when your only form of insurance is Medicare.

Areas I see growth:
  • Airframe manufacturing. Boeing and Airbus are salivating over the increasing Asian market.
  • On the business side, Bombardier is predicting 3-5% growth overall, but an astounding 10% growth in their large cabin business lines. There's quite a few reports predicting 6%-8% growth in the business segment.
  • As business and private jet aviation grows, there will be a need for pilots.
  • Pilot training. The US, Australia, and South Africa have a combination of open airspace, good weather, and cheap fuel prices that make training in these countries a cost-effective option

No effing way. Tell me that's not real.

My friend saw a lot of quite literally "shocking" things people do at job fairs. Like screaming at recruiters, talking smack about other candidates when you happen to be friends with them, pulling out mobile devices and texting as you're speaking with them.

Again, that's a failure of the current generation to reach out and mentor the next.

If I had a dime for every person who I've followed their neophyte phase at JC and they hit the "big time" that pretty much disappeared, didn't give back and graduated to the "All Complaints/No Solutions Crowd" at some of the other aviation websites and Facebook groups, I would be a millionaire.

But it's generally "Hey! Remember me! I haven't posted in a while, but I did something at XYZ that I think I need your advice for" emails always show up.

It's going to get worse because we have a lot of "What's the big deal?" attitude in droves now on all levels and it's not generational, it's all age groups.

.

Our fault for not mentoring the next? We're not their mommy/daddy; as the things I highlighted in bold shouldn't require mentoring, it falls under basic common courtesy. If the idiots didn't get that growing up, that's their loss and their failing.

The amount of whining, complaining, and entitlement I see with a number of people in the three major careers I'm involved in, is annoying and sad at the same time.

The world needs ditch diggers too.

I agree. And KISW is just the same 20 Metallica/AC/DC/Nirvana/Pearl Jam/Tool songs over and over again... with vastly too much talking in between.

I find that sometimes all a person can do is adjust your tie, dust yourself off, and get your walk on...

I'll listen to the Men's Room every now and then but it's pretty annoying after awhile. I mainly listen to Kiro or as my wife calls it "Angry White Man Radio"
