USCG Air Station Los Angeles to close this year

The USCG Air Station Los Angeles located at LAX is slated to close this year due to airport construction projects, and is scheduled to move to Pt Mugu NAS. I'm not sure what will be going in place of the former Air Station at the center of LAX, but having been at LAX since 1962, this will close out 54 years of operation at LAX.

Just met a Coastie that was stationed there and told some cool stories.

They started looking for a new base last Spring. Then I just didn't keep up. I think, (let me know if I am incorrect) that the move to Point Mugu is just a temporary home because they were looking to build a new facility at some point, someplace. They are a very important presence here and they work something like 140 rescues a year plus all the security they provide for the ports here. Expansion or not, I think it's a shame they are having their facilities/hangar/pad torn down with no plans to just relocate them at LAX. They also flew a lot of training missions in the area (like at Redondo, Manhattan, Palos Verdes etc.) and it was cool seeing them from time to time. Bummers.

Correct. This has apparently been in the works for a year or so, and I believe there were some who were petitioning Rep Maxine Waters to push to keep the Air Station at LAX, but I believe that fell through or wasn't pushed for or whatever.

Any idea what's being built in its place for the airport?

It's a part of what they are calling the Midfield Satellite Concourse North project and has been ongoing for a while now. Along with the CC, US Airways maintenance hangar down the way from the CC facility is toast, the AA employee parking (going over to their other area), they will be moving some parking areas, various electrical, water, gas, underground vaults, and beacons which all have to be relocated. I don't know how many gates will be there in the first phase, but in the plan there is a provision for expansion of the initial gates that they will be constructing. Going to be a large apron and more taxi ways obviously and various pax facilities there. It's going to be pretty damn big considering all the acreage. I think there is going to be a new ATC ramp tower as well. The whole thing won't be finished until late 2019, last I knew of which was a while back.

Related story about the Coast Guard moving from NAS Corpus Christi to Corpus Christi International:
USCG was flying Falcon 20's from NAS Corpus. They were going to move to CRP International to have more space, so a giant new hangar started being built. Then from what I heard, USCG changed from the Falcon to the CN35. As it stands now, the shell of the hangar is all built including doors, but the inside is still totally empty. The CN35s don't fit in the new hangar, so they're still stationed at NAS Corpus. The new construction has been stopped for over a year now.
