ORD & MDW Aviation Police Officers not allowed to Carry guns ??!!

I can't fathom why one would want certified law enforcement officers to do their jobs unarmed, then supplement them with another group of certified law enforcement officers.

Fortunately, the Officers at ABQ are armed. The Sunport has it's own department, separate from city police, despite the airport being operated by the city. Seems a little redundant to me, but I guess it could be worse.

Now the school district here (Albuquerque Public Schools) forbade it's Police Force (all certified LEOs, deputized by the county Sheriff) from being armed while on school property during school hours (they patrol in and around schools 24/7). The School Board thought this was a good idea because they didn't want guns in schools. I guess they thought the children would take the gun away from the Officer. The decision to keep the Officers unarmed during school hours was reversed a few years ago.

I'm a little confused here. There is a police force at ORD, that doesn't carry arms, but the airport is also patrolled by CPD? Why have the first group at all if CPD is there?

Presence of force.

These allow verbal, physical restraint and non lethal uses of force before deadly is involved.

IOW: Security Theater

I agree with the school of thought that the only thing which prevents terror attacks these days is intelligence, not an armed guard or police officer.

Stopping the attack as it is taking place is not proactive and is simply a response after the fact.

Did you read the story ? They are real police officers, not mall cops, get the facts !! they get the same salary, same training etc... They are just not armed while on duty at the airports..

I'm sure that the vast, vast majority of crimes and civil infractions at airports don't involve terrorists or violent crimes. Parking, theft, smuggling, and building security are all things that airport police may spend lots of time on, and probably all can be accomplished without having a firearm.

From experience about 90-95% of regular police interactions in major metropolitan cities can be accomplished without guns. State Highway patrol specifically probably spends 99-99.5% of the time in situations of either public order infractions (I.e. Speeding tickets and moving violations) or performing crash response.

We still don't disarm them out of fear that the guns they carry in a dual or triple retention holster might somehow cause more problems.

I suspect that the majority of police officers can go their entire careers without ever firing a gun. You wouldn't believe that watching 10 minutes of TV, but still true.

But if someone was flipping through a magazine about hammers and daydreaming about how they wish they could have a bigger, more powerful hammer, that would strike me as odd.

Don't have a dog in this fight, but this is basically exactly what I do when I look at tools in basically any catalog, or when I read about CNC machines and 3D printers. My brain basically says, "oooooh look at all the cool stuff I could build or take apart!"

Ok so..... let's see..:stir:
You guys should::def:
Remove the spare tire in you cars (if you have one) because flats are very rare
Remove the Oxygen masks in airliners, I never had mine drop in all those years of happy flying
Remove all the fire extinguishers, almost 100% never see any use:D
Oh, the life vests also are not needed , etc etc... Maybe someone else can lengthen ZEE list
We can all sing the Happy Happy Joy Joy song (ala Ren & Stimpy:p) or Comba yala:bounce: around a nice camp fire, wear our Dashikis and other garments with purple dots and flowers, be very happy & loving because this is such a wonderful perfect world... (UTOPIA City USA:cool:)

Firing, perhaps.
Drawing and releasing the tension in the trigger: a lot more than you think.

Why have Police officers carry firemarms??? They don't need them! We have the 2nd amendment! We have many people who have their own guns and I'm sure they can do a better job of defending themselves and others.

That's what I hear when said people start talking about defending themselves and this country against the government.

This should be good..... hehehehhe

Nah, if it goes astray I'll just tack it onto the other thread.

You're welcome.

Resurrecting an old thread here. I'm waiting for my plane in the H Concourse at ORD. The Chicago PD, Ohare PD, and DHS Police are all at my gate, waiting to greet a passenger on an incoming flight. The Ohare police are not wearing handguns, but the others are. The DHS guys are sporting their tactical gear. Based on what I can see, there is an abundance of firepower here. The flying public appears to be well protected

They are told to run and hide in case of an active shooting (or any trouble for that matter). WTF ?? This is the most asinine thing I can think off. How can you not allow a LEO to carry a weapon and respond to a threat ??
I just cannot understand.
I never paid any attention and didn't realize that they were not armed.
This is a load of CRAP, BS, something must be done about it !

Meh. They'll be fine. They're in a city with probably the strongest gun laws in the country.
That's why there's rarely ever a shooting in Chicago. Nothing to worry about.

Strongest gun laws don't mean anything when you can just drive an hour or two and be away from them. Localized gun control does nothing, it has to be a national uniform (minimum) standard to work. It's such an obvious point I don't understand why people bother bringing up the "Chicago has such strict gun laws how did this happen" argument
