Dispatch Locations

Sorry for being such a noob but I am still a year off from getting my license.

Are the dispatch offices always in the main headquarters of the airline or do they have locations separate from the HQ? For example, do all United dispatchers work in downtown Chicago or are there United dispatchers in another area like Colorado or Indiana, etc.

Thanks.

Usually all the dispatchers for an airline - at least in the US, although I imagine it's also true for most foreign carriers - are at the corporate HQ for that airline or located nearby. United did at one time have separate dispatch offices...I think they had them in SFO, ORD, and IAD, and for a while Northwest had a dispatch office in Tokyo, plus Continental used to have a subsidiary called Continental Micronesia in Guam...but I don't know of any US airlines that currently do this. It is possible for the dispatch office location to be separate from the HQ (prior to the CO merger, UA had its headquarters in downtown Chicago for a while and its dispatch office was in Elk Grove, closer to the airport) but it's always in the same vicinity right now. Management likes to be able to come to dispatch quickly in the event of a crisis, I think.

Ha!:bounce: Have yet to see this happen. I'm sure many unions would have an issue with this but it all depends on how the contract is written and if those management personnel are paying dues.

USAirways always had their dispatch office in PIT despite HQ being in PHX and prior to the America West merger, DCA. However now that the AA merger has been completed they have built a new IOC in DFW. It's technically not part of the company HQ, but it's part of a big company campus that includes the Flight Academy, Southern Res Office, and Flagship U among other buildings. The current HQ on Amon Carter will be replaced with a new HQ to be part of that campus.

I can't think of any other airlines that have the Dispatch office segregated from the HQ off the top of my head.

The new HQ is going to be south of the IOC/Flight Academy campus. It will be behind Fort Worth center and the AA training and conference center. Its only going to be marginally closer than it is now.

I wouldn't be shocked if UA dispatch one day moves back to Elk Grove and the HQ presence stays in downtown Chicago. However, I don't think it will happen anytime soon.

Gotta agree with dispatch offices being in the corporate HQs close to management...that's how it is here at my work. We're at the corporate HQs, the OCC Manager is obviously in our office, as well as the scheduling manager. Down the hall is the VP of Operations (basically the DO), as well as the VP of Business Development and Director of In-Flight Services...so management is definitely usually close by...

I actually view both sides of FAA as the same campus...so I view the new HQ and Flagship U and the Training and Conference center on one side and the IOC, Flight Academy and the SRO all as part of the same campus. But what you say about the new HQ is true. Will be closer to the IOC but not that much closer. Though I have seen Doug Parker walking through the IOC on occasion.
