Alright so I have the IHG Card, and signed up with Hertz Rewards, Marriott rewards, and Avis rewards. Any recommendations on other reward programs I should sign up to now?
Make sure you spend what you need to at IHG to get those 60K bonus points which should be easy. You could also sign up for Club Carlson and maybe Best Western. Best Western will status match so if you contact them and show them proof of your status with IHG they should give it to you as well. Also if you know you're going to be somewhere for awhile there are challenges you can contact Marriott and Hilton about that will let you earn statuses faster if you stay so many nights in a shorter period of time. If you google for it and are really aggressive about it, it can be done.
Those points at IHG can be really great. I've spent as little as 5,000 points on a night at a Candlewood Suites although 10,000 is more common which makes working on your own much more affordable if you get stuck by yourself for awhile. It's a bit tricky, but I've used them multiple days by applying the points every morning so there was no risk of me being moved to another project and forfeiting those points.
You will end up splitting the points between your roommates. Some people don't care about their points and you're free to take them, but I'd talk it over with your co-workers first rather than piss anyone off by just helping yourself to them all. You can also negotiate a lot with hotels as far as price. I know the other companies are better about teaching their pilots how to negotiate rates, but if you're up for it you can talk them down quite a bit in a lot of situations. One of our pilots in Pensacola negotiated a huge hotel room with a balcony for like $90 a night while he was there with some co-workers in a January. Also some pilots are trying to save as much as possible so I wouldn't push them on the nicer hotels if they're not up for spending that kind of money. Thanks to Trip Advisor you can find some really nice properties that aren't Hilton, IHG or Marriott. Don't be a slave to the points as sometimes you can get a boutique or not chain hotel in a great location, but could take the points and stay by a home depot and an Applebeas. I loved being able to walk to bars and restaurants. There is also VRBO and AirBnB which can work well in some instances and having an apartment or a condo on the road is a welcome change from your typical hotel room. If you really need to save money and are working solo you can rent a room from someone on Airbnb pretty reasonably you just won't have as much privacy as if you were at a hotel, but I never had any bad experiences from that.
Rental car points are nice, but its a bit of a liability having the car in your name so I wouldn't bother trying to split those up. Some redlight cameras won't show you who is driving if you run a red light and the ticket will go to the person who's name is on the agreement. I never got many upgrades, but the points were nice for renting big vans for moving stuff around, one way rental cars and the occasional week long rental.
You might want to check into some of the benefits the hotels have too. Some have passes to nearby gyms and fitness centers so you can work out nearby as most hotel gyms suck.
Also most hotel chains are having points promotions. Sign up now for double points at Hilton, Marriott and IHG as the window to register isn't that much longer.
