Airshows shouldn't exist

Except that transportation is a necessity for a civilized society, and air shows are not.

Let me make sure I'm getting this right. We need air transportation in order to support a "civilized society"? Someone needs to start lining out the first 99% of the History of Civilization. Will Durant is going to be PISSED. Hammurabi is probably spinning, too. Although to be fair, he was ok with dogs, as far as I can tell. So you're batting .500, professor.

Nobody (as far as I can tell) is advocating the complete removal (banning) of risk-inherent ventures, simply the mitigation of said risk to people in the background. Could unassociated people be killed at an airshow? Possibly. Will people be killed by drunk or reckless drivers? Obviously. Will innocent people be killed with guns? Of course. But guess what, all of these activities will continue in perpetuity so long as free choice exists in this country and the onus is on those who safely enjoy said activities to mitigate the risk as much as humanly possible. If we were all so seriously concerned that our daily actions could have unintended consequences to innocent bystanders we probably wouldn't have hobbies or jobs.

So, we would still be in mid evil/dark ages possibly, yes? My magic Eight Ball said, "More than likely". Whew, thank God those long before us took chances at stuff.

Just FYI, Syria won't be hosting any air shows this year, however, that is not to say that military aircraft won't be flying over Syria. If air shows absolutely strike fear to your inner core, Syria may be worth looking into. But, be forewarned, other dangerous activities are occurring in Syria.

Have fun, be safe!!! :)

Sometimes tragic things happen that are just tragic. I don't think any of us would advocate the limitation of skyscrapers or aviation around cities just because some whack job decides to fly a plane into one of them to make a point. (And there's been a few non-terrorist accidents too). We've seen the public and governmental response to such an action. How do we feel about TSA? What has it done for public safety? Or did an overhaul of how hijacking situations and an aircrews response to that situation have a more substantial impact to airline safety? My point is just that we shouldn't be focusing on how to restrict what we do, just how can we do what we do better and more safely. Good processes produce good results. Knee-jerk responses are almost never correct or effective.

As I said before, you're just being obtuse. You know damned well a modern society can't exist without air travel.

Not really. The entire economy would collapse without air travel, and civil society with it.

No. the economy would regress back to around the 50s or so and plateau. As for society, once all the "have to have it now" types die out, the Luddites would flourish. Society will not collapse into anarchy just because overnight shipping no longer exists.

Besides, once transporter tech is viable, no need for archaic transportation systems. Just don't wear a red shirt.

I think you're a bit too optimistic about society. If our GDP collapsed to 1950s levels, the chaos that would result would drive us into complete anarchy.

Nope. Try again. 90% of the worlds goods are shipped by boat, which then goes on to be put in trucks. That's not to discount the convenience of shipping by air. But the world economy certainly would not collapse, and we wouldn't be pushed back into the dark ages. Things would certainly change, but it's not all doom and gloom, "my way is the only way" like you so often like to describe it. Your opinion, is wrong. Facts do not support it.

How, if only 10% of shipping is left (with a large portion of that being by train, with only 1% done by air) would the world economy collapse? You're telling us, that because little Johnny didn't get his iPad in 4 days, the world economy would be doomed? Or since there wasn't those pretty flowers at the wedding, divorce rates would skyrocket, leading to citizens going out into the street and creating anarchy? You're being ridiculous, and narrow minded.

As for meetings, Skype. Things that you just have to be there for, will have to wait. I flew charter for a few years. Better than 75% of who we flew, wasn't for business. People would have to move closer to their work for those that commute by air, or, they'd have to use the train system, much like they already do in the Northeast.
