I built one of these after reading that thread on Reddit, but haven't had a chance to test it in the air just yet. At the very least, Foreflight recognizes it as a device.

Not to mention there's something to be said for open source software and being able to do it yourself. It's not always about the money. Most of the guys working on this project own aircraft so they're no stranger to $1,000 gadgets. For many it's just the joy of tinkering.

No, I get that, and you're right. The point for a lot of people is that some DIY works are bigger than they realize because there is a learning curve up to the baseline. Depends on the person, I guess.

There is also the element of being able to add features that are not available in commercial units. I've been working on and off on a custom variometer for a year or so. I want one with a louder speaker, that can pair via bluetooth to my phone, and have a basic GPS map. If I build a prototype that I like, might be worth manufacturing them.
Plus, I like playing with electronics anyway. Saving money isn't really the point (circuit design and especially software design is expensive). More of a learning exercise. The sophistication, simplicity and cost of development tools and prototype boards has been amazing in the last 10 years though. Orders of magnitude better than when I was in college.

Fired it up today and it works! Took longer to get it out of the packaging than it did to get it up an running.
So if I can do it... Pretty much anyone with a pulse could.
