Airshows shouldn't exist

As far as I can find the last spectator deaths involving an American air show was in Germany in 1988, 27 years ago...... and the spectators in Reno since 2008.

Sadly, I would include Reno in the "spectators hurt at airshows" in any reasonable conversation. I don't know if the two events are governed under the exact same set of rules, but they are similar enough to be grouped together in my mind.

I did include the Reno deaths in my last post. While similar there were/are different rules for air races and dedicated air show performances. Although after the Reno tragedy the race rules changed as well.

We mourn the losses as they occur, and realize that sometimes all you can do is take precautions and accept that despite reasonable effort to ensure safety, accidents happen.
True that. Unfortunetely our world has de-evolved to a society that HAS to find a responsible for anyhing wrong that happens, torch (sue) who ever is and be happy. Wait for the next mess to do it again. Whatever happened to parents saying "it was an accident, move along"?

Instant gratification. People panic and they think as long as something, anything is done about it, they're safe. But those who know better need to stop catering to the ignorant. They may outnumber the rest of us in this country, but if we let their stupidity dictate our actions, we're no better than they.

Which is why I'm a "Big Data" fan.

Statistics and probability are delicious little things that make me happy.

But I'm also the person that bitches about when the buxom weather girl uses the word "chance" instead of "probability". There's always a 100% chance of rain, however the probability…

Like no one on this website is going to die from a shark attack.

100% chance, less than 0.0000001% probability (look it up).

And you have a higher probability of being in a fatal shark attack than you have from getting killed at an airshow.

This is America. We're supposed to be smarter than this.

That's all I've been trying to say. Put 20k people in an arena to watch a basketball game and statistically 4-5 of them will die from choking. It's just numbers. Emotion is great, numbers are truth.

Here's a pretty great quote from Helen Keller of all people.

"Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. The fearful are caught as often as the bold."

I love numbers.

Like I'd love to conduct (or find) a study on how much worse off you are by eating formed glop manufactured to be a chicken substitute than just eating natural chicken.

Like environmentalists that love Almond Milk. It takes a crap-ton of water to produce even one almond, then not many almonds actually go into almond milk, it's mostly water and chemical to give it color and consistency. Drink non-fat milk, you know exactly where it comes from and exactly what's in it! :)

As far as I can find the last spectator deaths involving an American air show was in Germany in 1988, 27 years ago. And it wasn't even on US soil. Though it did bring about rule changes involving energy directed away from spectators. On PPW some one claims it's been since 1954 since there has been a spectator death at a US air show. I can't find data to verify that however. I can however confirm more people were killed by a single 121 accident in Buffalo than evey performer fatality and the spectators in Reno since 2008 (roughly 2,100 individual air shows). So when we talk about airplanes falling out of the sky into cars and houses, it's only fair we include accidents such as Buffalo.

Yup, and I didn't see seggy lobbying HIS airline to shut down or start flying over unpopulated areas. I mean, the house they crashed into was miles from the airport. DANGER!!!

Hey, I live at the beach. I like to float in the water and watch the planes fly over during the local air show. What are the chances a plane crashes on me at the exact same time a shark bites my ass?

I've ignored one person who seems to think air shows should be banned, are there more than two? Why is this thread at 11 pages? I've seen a lot of common sense in this thread, why even pay attention to the ridiculousness?

While we're here Ghost Peppers shouldn't exist. Seriously. I've got about 50 on my deck. I'll take my chances at air show death before I consume another straight off the plant. Risk reward I guess.
