It appears that the procedure is strictly for research purposes and will aid theInternational Air Transport Association (IATA) in ensuring flight safety. Passengers will be asked to proceed through a weighing machine in the departure gate zone.

I'm curious how they came to the conclusion that Uzbeks represent the weights of every air traveller on the globe.

...or maybe Uzbek Air was the first airline to agree to this after IATA got "hell no" from everyone else.

Weighing passengers = overweight flights = bumped passengers = airlines really don't want this.

Commuters don't want this......."Heck why do we need to know the weight of the plane? We've been fudging it for years and I've made my commutes.........No where's my ALPA rep?!? The gate agent asked if we planned to accept a 117 extension, THIS IS NOT SAFE!!!"

USAir Express 5481 at CLT?

The plane was slightly overweight and have an aft CG. However the main problem was that maintenance on the aircraft's elevator was done incorrectly. Mx also didn't perform the proper checks to return the aircraft to service. This cause the flight crew to not have fully use of the elevator. The NTSB concluded that neither problem alone would have crashed the aircraft. It took the putting both problems together to align the holes in the swiss cheese. The pilots had a legal w & b based on current regulations.

I know some air carriers increase avg bag weights on select routes in the interest of safety

Don't like it? Put down the fork. Average weights are already wildly outside of what's healthy. And I mean sure there are people who are just huge for reasons that have nothing to do with a total lack of self-control. To them I say: give me back my lunch money, then we'll talk.

I don't know, sounds like you guys are arguing against safety. Let's weigh everyone.

Also, 3rd class medicals in order to drive a car...

Are they still using 170 summer weight? We are a tubby nation, I bet the real numbers are higher.
