cheating in the new FAA biographical questionnaire exposed

So.. they recognized a shortage of certain demographics within the FAA and controllers. Instead of trying to find a way to attract qualified applicants within this demographic, or finding ways to get those within the desired demographic the training to compete for these jobs, the qualifications were drastically changed.

YES

Totally seems that way from what I've read about people going thru OKC recently. People getting all the way to OKC just to say "Wait, I have to move for this? I'll go back to programming mobile apps, see yah!". Then those spots get filled with more of the fortunate few who pass the BQ but otherwise may have no quals for the job. Rinse, cycle, repeat...

But the question is, why would they NOT want people who will love/care about the job and not have the paycheck be their sole motivation for clocking in? So strange, then again, what isn't about this process? Any chat with the FAA guys here about trying to get in usually starts with a very sympathetic tone like I'm a 5 year old kid who just said he wants to be an astronaut. I'm just rooting for the ONE guy I know who made it thru the BQ. Good luck @Bigey!

Thanks bro! Just got the e-mail to schedule my AT-SAT. Hoping I can pass it again...it's only been 6 years! ;)

Nope. Never made it through the previous round of OTS hiring. First time with the new round and passing the BioQ.

I am lost for words, I do not know how to reply to this. Its a sad sad sad new world in ATC if this is how its being run, but i think i see where the FFA is going with this and it should not surprise anyone who has been on the inside. I WEEP FOR THE FUTURE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Lets just call it what it is, they realized they had too many white people, especially white men. They decided that isn't ok, so they have come across a way to specifically do their best to not hire white guys. So essentially in their efforts to create equality they are actually discriminating white guys...

This is not to say that other races aren't just as deserving, it just baffles me that they felt it was too white dominant so they in turn are now trying their best to slow down white guys getting into ATC. If only our country focused on who is most qualified for jobs and didn't take any account of gender or race... but we all know that won't ever happen.

Yup, meanwhile the rest of us get closer to that age out marker waiting for the FAA to get their s*#@ together....

You sure about that? I only know one guy who passed the BQ and made it through OKC to be an FAA controller since the process changed. He's on this site, he's white, and he never mentioned a disproportionate amount of minorities in OKC during all our talks as he went thru the process.

If there is foundation to this profiling, then sure I'd be pissed. But since I have yet to see anything credible to suggest any truth to this accusation, I advise you not to get on the "IT'S BECAUSE I'M WHITE" bandwagon.

My class of 18 was still mostly white dudes. The academy and my facility is still mostly white dudes. We had 4 minorities in our class...not a gigantic amount. The word is that a group called the NBCFAE which represents African American controllers hijacked the hiring process and had someone in HR helping them get their members into the agency...but I certainly didn't notice a significant amount of African Americans in OKC. Unless they all got hired after me and showed up at the academy after I left...who knows?

The whole change sucks though. I hate seeing people like @ChasenSFO not get their shot, while people I know from the Academy that have already washed out are getting to go back through. It's crappy.

IF that turns out to be true, I'll go full White Panther.

This is so dang screwed up. Let's not hire people based on them being awesome performers and passionate about aviation, let's hire little Johnny over here because he picked the magical number of sports played in high school.

I retired from the FAA as a center controller and what a great career it was for me. I took a civil service exam at the post office, spent 2 1/2 years being trained as a controller. 4 of the 10 of us made it. It was hard, but very worthwhile. After the strike, only 20% of us remained to train up 40,000 students of which 15,000 made it. No BQ, psych test or suitability judgements were necessary. The FAA hired the same type of personalities as before the strike and ATC in America is the best. I've worked in other countries and know how good this system is for safety and efficiency. I'm disappointed the FAA has taken a turn away from what worked and is instead focusing on social, political drivers and discounting the need for smart, aviation oriented individuals that want this career such as the CTIs and pilots.

Last year a friend of mine with an ATP, CFI/II/MEI, Aeronautical Degree and ATC degree too was turned down on his application after only answering the first two questions: 1. Race: (Caucasian) 2. Sex: (male) and the webpage stopped and told him that he was not eligible for this position. This is just asinine.

Um.... no. Your friend is either full of feces or his computer crashed... the only people I hear saying ridiculous stuff like this are those that are still butt hurt over not getting selected. I'm not a fan and agree that ctis have a valid complaint to some extent, but these excuses just get dumb. Out of the 10 new trainees we got from this bid 7 are Caucasian males and 3 are Caucasian females....

Check your facts Cmac, if you spend any amount of time looking at this issue online, there are plenty of examples where people are being marked "biographically Ineligible" directly resulting from the BQ. The Wall Street Journal article on this issue dated may 2014 lists a number of lawsuits filed because of racial discrimination resulting from the BQ. Look at the CTI Class Action lawsuit.

So no, this is not just an issue of being pissed off by not getting a job. This is not an issue of computers crashing. This is a legitimate problem with the way the FAA BQ is being used to screen applicants based on race instead of skill, ability and qualification.

Nobody got told to not continue the application after saying they were white and male. Anybody saying that either doesn't understand the process they went through or are exaggerating things to rile up support. Being deemed "bio graphically ineligible" means they failed the Biographical Questionaire. The BQ asked personality questions, not race/gender questions.

Source: I'm a white male that got hired off last years bid and am in training at a center right now.

@nabbyfan, I apologize if I made it sound like he discontinued is application. He still submitted it and is waiting/hoping for a call about a position. My main point above is related to the ridiculousness of the BQ in general. I am glad you were still able to get a job. Maybe that means there is hope for others too.

It's all good....I understand people's frustration. It's a really wonky process and even when you get picked it's frustrating with how they do placements and everything else. Graduate one week and you get no options and then watch people the week behind you get their pick of 5 different facilities including the facility 20 minutes from your house and HCF...annoying.
The thing that people don't seem to understand is that 30,000 people applied for less than 2000 jobs. Even if only CTI grads applied, there were still fewer jobs than applicants. There was no way for everybody that's "qualified" to get an academy spot....and honestly unless you went to one of the really good CTI schools it didn't do much difference at the academy.
