True statement. The trick is not blowing all of it. I know guys making $200k/year who are just as broke as a guy making $20k.

Ehhhh. When I got furloughed from XJT and 4 months later, my wife, as a four year teacher got laid off. THAT was complicated. I'll take both of us gainfully employed every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I should add: The best thing I did when I started making decent money was to actually cut my own budget. I paid off a lot of debt (and still am), and am putting a good amount of money away at the same time. I drive a basic VW Golf, have a modest apartment, and don't go out spending money on random stuff (typing this on a 2011 MacBook, currently) unless I need to.
Basically, I'm happy with the "size" of my life right now, so there's no need to make it bigger. While I still have a good ways to go until my debt is paid off, financial security has less to do with the size of the W2, and more to do with how your W2 is utilized. Basic advice I know, but easy to stray from.

My advice has always been to set your budget at 70% of guarantee. That way, if big paycuts come along (and they always do eventually), you don't have to change anything in your life and you don't have start picking up gobs of open time to pay your bills.

I know someone who used to talk about how well he and his wife managed money. Several years later he's $1.2 million poorer and sans wife.

Apparently our EXCO has a list of guys who did $400k with us last year. All senior LCAs/SCAs (except one). Good for them, except I have to wonder how they were all able to consistently credit 140+ hours/month.
