Imagine one of these toys in the wrong hands

Saw this discussed on another forum I frequent. It's actually quite real, and cost probably less than $1K to make.

The major issues here are around safety. If anyone - ANYONE nearby is within line of sight of a reflection from that thing, they are going to be permanently blinded in a microsecond.

I admire the kid because building something like this is cool, but there is a reason that people build lasers in labs with fixed beams and fixed targets.

Somebody would also be blinded if they got hit in the face with an actual shotgun, and plenty of people have those.

This is true. The difference is that the shotgun has to be pointed at you, or you have to catch a ricochet somewhere in the field of fire with limited range. Light doesn't really know any range, and you can catch a reflection standing ANYWHERE. Plus, you could heal, maybe, if you caught some pellets, even in the face.

Eye injuries are often permanent.

And, by the way, I didn't say anyone couldn't or shouldn't have these - like I said, I think it's cool. You wouldn't ignore safety with a firearm, and you shouldn't ignore it with a laser.
