iPad glitch grounds two dozen American flights

Pretty screens...

From what I have heard re-download of the Jepp FD product is required. Hence wifi access is needed.
So then what the story said is inaccurate. It said the pilots said, and quoted, something like the fo's iPad went black, then his did also. I've been using Jepp FD for 3 years and never had problems. I make sure all updates are done the night before a flight, fully recharged, and off it goes until at the airport. I'm interested to hear more of what actually happened.

I guess this explains why an MD-80 FO spent 45 minutes trying to print a Jepp chart this morning down in ops.

Really? Am going to carry a few NACO plates with me the next few flights I take. Much easier, and if unused by the crew I'm sure I can leave them in a few creative places...

Id rather have the ipad then those bigazz screens with the cords in my way.

It does swivel horizontal, vertical, whatever you want. It's a big cord but not necessarily in your way. The big cord goes into what used to be the water bottle cubicle and although there's no official word if we can't use it for water bottles, methinks any cord in there would be susceptible to damage with enough water bottles thrown in there.

Something about a certain airport being in the favorites or selecting it bricked it. We have different/special performance numbers and I'm guessing an update corrupted it. I really don't know as it wasn't my fleet effected. Seems to be specific to one fleet type and one airport.

I'll generally charge and update it (if the device is in the allowable upgrade window), turn it off and leave it in airplane mode until the night before my next trip.

The only thing I use it for is SouthernJets stuff and nothing else. Works "ok" for the most part. I still don't like it, but:

a) I didn't pay a cent for it.
b) They paid me to learn how to use it.
c) It's not mine.
d) Beats carrying Jepps and especially beats using the "ships set" with skeet, coffee stains, old man hairs, and highlights in places where obviously the previous user spend more time hilighting than actually reading… especially the part about NOT MAKING ANY DAMNED MARKS OR HIGHLIGHTS IN THE SHIPS MANUALS.

Awww skeet skeet.

Correct. The Surface must be updated within 24 hours of signing in for a rotation, but once signed in, no updates are supposed to be done. The theory is, if the tablet craps the bed before starting, trade it in, but don't tempt fate while flying.
As an aside. @Cptnchia and I discussed the merits of the Surface for normal ops a few months ago. After they've been online for a while, do you like it? Is it a little cumbersome? Since then I've purchased a Surface Pro 3 and like it quite a bit as a laptop replacement. I still use my iPad more for every day stuff/cockpit though.

Personally, I like them. It's not to cumbersome, and if you make sure the battery keyboard is attached properly, that thing lasts all day. I just did a crossing, left it awake the whole way, and 8:30 later it still hadn't switched over to the main battery. That was with the blue tooth on too! (Southernjetters know what I'm talkin 'bout!) Not sure what everyone's beef is. Yes, the 2 is only windows RT, but the next issue is gonna be the 4's with full windows. That's when the full capabilities will come into play. That should be in another year, I think?

Nice. The new smaller 3 might be the way to go, or a faster version of it next release. I'm loving mine so far, don't do a lot with it right now, but for a laptop the size and battery life are awesome. When I do use it, it's for several hours at a time and I rarely plug it in. Thanks for the feed back.
