JC Surfers?

Anyone surf last weekend? That was a decent swell that came through CA, but not quite as clean as I had hoped for (oh well).
Sure did. Lots of fun. Fun little SW down here in Socal, but last Saturday was clean and glassy even into the afternoon. I was out surfing with one other guy, and we were both amazed that we were getting such great conditions with no crowd.

Surfline is my favorite site ever, by the way. When it reports poor conditions but it's actually clean? Nobody takes the time to drive out to the beach to check it themselves, so those of us who live next to the break get it all to ourselves. :D

Except for today. Reported poor. I drove down to try to motivate myself, went to get doughnuts instead.

I went out! Third wave of the day was a left-hander that I rode all the way to the beach. You had to pick your waves with the choppy WNW swell going on right now, but it was totally rideable. Definitely a longboard day to cut through the chop, though. The other couple guys out were riding shortboards, and didn't seem to be having as much fun.

Found this on craigslist, a rich guy with a place on the sand bought it for his wife who never tried it. Lowballed his already low price, and after a few days I won. The paddle alone is worth nearly what I paid for the package. Been riding it the last 3 days, it turns the smallest waves into tons of fun.

Now if only your SUP comrades will act appropriately in the lineup. ;)

I plan on surfing The Hook tomorrow. It is a bit of a drive from Monterey, say 30-45 minutes, depending on traffic.

I could probably make that happen. Any chance you have, or know someone who has, an extra board? I usually ride a 9'2" and can hold my own in anything head high or a bit bigger.

I surfed this AM/early afternoon and will not get out there again until, most likely, a week from now. My fault for not getting in touch sooner.

Let me know when you are next up here! We can go surf Second Bowl or Sharks.

Not a problem and I'll definitely get in touch if we're out this way again. I'm thinking about renting a board and buying a wetsuit so I can get out tomorrow or Monday. This would be my first surfing experience off of the east coast. Kind of hard to pass up the opportunity.

Great! I will show you where to go for your rental board and wetsuit. I think you will like the surf here :)

How? And are you OK?

I'm fine, thanks. I was out on Monday during the SW swell we had, and hit a bump in the bottom turn and wiped out. Came up, and the board was broken. Probably got hit by the lip. I took it down to an excellent repair shop here in SD, and they're working on it.

Just a bummer! The quad with the little guitar pick 5th fin is awesome, by the way. Tightens up the ride just a little bit but doesn't slow the board down.

Several years ago, I cracked an old board in two while dodging a wave at Steamer. It was not worth repairing, so off I went to get a new board. Good thing that yours can be fixed.

Anyone going to be in the Manhattan Beach area on Friday? I am scheduled to have a long overnight and am thinking about renting a board there. Is the water warm enough now for a rash guard/board shorts?

I still wear a 3/2 full or 2/1 spring depending on the air temp... I still don't see anyone trunking it yet. But we're not from SC. ;)

By the way, I'm really looking into picking up a 8'0 Walden Magic as a fun, in-between all-arounder. I like the 9'0 longboard I have, but it's not tremendously maneuverable and it's a bit too much board in a steep beach break. I know yours is a 9'0, but are you still sold on the thing?
