An Alaska Airlines flight bound for Los Angeles made an emergency return to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport today after passengers and the pilot heard someone banging beneath the airplane.

After landing, an airport ramp agent was found trapped inside the front cargo hold. The Seattle-based airline said that hold is pressurized and temperature controlled.

Alaska Airlines said the agent, an employee of Menzies Aviation, said he had fallen asleep in the cargo hold.

The plane was in the air for 14 minutes.

The ramp agent “appeared okay,” but was taken to a hospital as a precaution, Alaska Airlines said in a news release.

Passengers told Seattle TV stations that they could hear screaming beneath them.

The airline is investigating, the release said.

"Fell asleep." You get what you pay for. That being said, it may be time to think about putting some sort of switch in the cargo hold to alert the pilots if someone is stuck inside. Perhaps an O2 mask and a heavy coat, and when the O2 is started an EICAS message appears.

Most if not all cargo compartments in airliners are pressurized and have conditioned air as far as I know.

Westjets 737s front holds were the only ones heated when I worked on the ramp, animals or hummers were not allowed to go in the back holds.

Can't have an EICAS message on a plane that doesn't have an EICAS. Yes, the hunk of junk 737NG does not have a central messaging system... just a caution and go on an easter egg hunt to go find what broke. Start of the art, not state of the art!
