"Cleared in the class Bravo" Or am I?...

However, if I am assigned a heading on a congested frequency by an approach controller, and I didn't hear the words and I am unable to solicit them, I am not going to run up to the bravo shelf and go into a hold, I am going to maintain my assigned heading as long as I deem it safe. After all, the VFR pilot is ultimately responsible for their own separation, even in class B, and I can't see what is behind me.

False false false. When VFR in class E airspace assigned headings and altitudes are only suggestions, they are NEVER clearances. You are not required to talk to anyone in class E VFR. And B is the ONLY airspace required to obtain a clearance.

Unable to ask a question? Are you seriously saying its SO busy sometimes that you don't have time to utter "we're gunna need a B clearance"? That takes 2 seconds. Are you one of those guys that waits for a 3 second pause between calls to key the mic?

Inside class B ATC is REQUIRED to provide separation. Not so in any other airspace.

This thread is so full of misinformation its ridiculous. It should have been one post: "get a "cleared into the B" clearance on the tapes because the book says so."

Thats it. No more, no less.

Plus, if it's that busy on the frequency, chances are, not only were you not cleared into the Class B, but we're refused flight following (unless you were taking off or landing at the primary)not begin with.

How about the instrument equivalent? Pilot is on an IFR flight plan and has been instructed to join the localizer. But it is so busy on the frequency, the pilot decides ATC just didn't have the time to say "cleared for the approach" and just starts down then the glide slope is intercepted without a word.

Busy Class D, let's assume "cleared for landing" since, after all, if they instructed to enter downwind...

We just know that they let folks through that Restructed Area live flying range on weekends , so why bother waiting for the words of clearance if we can't raise someone?

See we dont have that problem in Chicago, if your VFR and you aint landing at The Big Show the answer is a plain NO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's somewhat draconian and boring, but hey...every place have their own little "culture" on how they do things. Over here we'll work a gazillion VFR overflights through the Bravo, however we do have certain altitudes we normally don't issue (typically nothing below 4500 crossing the EWR-LGA-JFK finals).

Hay heres a joke i was told years ago,

" N90 can handle 2 planes no clouds, 1 plane 1 cloud, or 2 clouds and no planes" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

(Drops mic and walks away)

Actually, we usually work around WX stuff pretty good. Its ZNY that has a lot of issues anytime there's a cloud in their airspace.

Neanderthals. I can't wait to retire so I can compare *sizes* NOT. I hate the FAA, their employees and the culture they stand for. Mine's bigger

I teach my students to write down the time of their Bravo clearance.

I once had a student who was flying a scenic flight over the big city. After a controller change, the new guy thought he was not supposed to be in the Bravo. After getting the "we need you to call this phone number" on landing, I had him go to liveatc.com to go listen to his Bravo clearance again. The phone conversation went "We received a Class Bravo clearance at appoximately 1234 Zulu. Here's the clearance we received (I played back the liveatc segment). Would you like us to make a tape request under the Pilot's Bill of Rights?"

We got "That's not necessary. Have a good day." as the response.

That's effing hilarious. I'm going to print this out and hang it on the board when NY's daily ridiculous "MIT as one" goes up.

:)

Absolutely not! You may have been told to join the localizer ( actually you intercept localizers, you join airways ) and not cleared while the controller waits for a cancellation from a previous arrival. Start down on your own, you may just meet a go-around head on at an altitude you weren't cleared to.

LOL. Of course not. It usually helps to read a thread for the context of a post (a rhetorical one at that) before indicating disagreement with something one agrees with. :D
