BMI > 35, new medical rules

Do you have a problem also with gay men who have at risk sex being screened for the HIV?

Diseases that have a common trait should be screened for those with the trait. It is beneficial for you! Why is this so hard?

Also why do Americans brag about being heavy? It is unhealthy! If you have 80kg, it is in general not as healthy as having 70 kg. Americans love to act like being fat is a right, it is poor math (kCal in vs kCal out) and generally unhealthy eating or lack of exercise that is it.

Metric… *giggle*! :)

Well, it is a right. Here in America, we can eat whatever we want, as it should be. But you're right, it is unhealthy. That's why we need to put a stop to all of this "big is beautiful," "plus sized," and "curvy" model nonsense that is gaining steam. I have a right to be a fat ass. But I don't have a right to force everyone to accept it as healthy and normal.

Aitran Pilot to Slumlord to Model? Damn your career rocks

As a physician, may I, "ahem", weigh in on this topic?
BMI greater than 35 is the definition of morbid obesity.
Morbid obesity is a serious health condition that can interfere with basic physical functions such as breathing or walking. In other words, if you have "morbid" anything, that condition is KILLING you. As some of you have probably seen, there is a general condition called metabolic syndrome, which includes morbid obesity, kidney issues, liver issues, diabetes, sleep issues (including apnea).

People suffering from sleep apnea have the same reaction times and cognitive functions as people who are legally drunk. I would refer you to the work of Dr. William Dement for the various documented horrors of sleep-deprived truck/car accidents.

All of this is to say that, as a commercial aviation passenger, and private pilot, I would not feel comfortable with a pilot who was suffering from UNTREATED sleep apnea. Therefore, it's my humble opinion that this new recommendation is not unreasonable.

Should of know this would pop up again. It does each time I'm headed to the schoolhouse. 8( Loss of medical insurance here I come!!!

"beefcake....BEEFCAKE!"

Cameras are setting up, and I'm lookin' totally ripped.

In all seriousness, thanks to better nutrition, heath care, exercise and lifestyle, more people than ever are dropping dead in perfect health*.

Enjoy life kids.

Speaking of smoke, do you blaze? We should smoke some cigars on a FL layover.

I don't, but I can be enticed to a frosty beverage while others do.

Cheeseburgers are my true vice. Along with bacon, coffee and bacon..

Mmmmmm bacon.

I had to give up the %100 Kona Coffee from Lion Coffee....it was getting to be a VERY expensive habit...like crack expensive. I weaned myself down to the dyed sawdust that masquerades as coffee, although Caribou Guatemala is somewhat passable.

CAMAAAN! Crack is cheap! At least the direct costs are. Indirectly, not so much! :) Alright, well, cold beer and cheeseburgers on me when our paths cross again and there's time.

I absolutely hate running as well. It hammers my joints and I just can't stand it. So I decided if I was going to run 3 miles, I'll walk 6. I went from 210 to 180 in about four months by walking and eating a bit healthier. If you've got two hours, that's 8 miles easy. I started reading some walking studies. I found that walking is about 80-90% as effective as running, especially after around 3 miles. At my peak I was doing 15-17 miles at a time. It gets addictive.
If you walk those distances with a large strong dog and go off road the benefits multiply.

Just to add, I think BMI is a over simplified way to judge if one is obese, or even over weight. I'm by no means fat. But according to the charts, I am over weight. I have almost no fat on me at all. I eat reasonably well, get an average amount of exercise, and have a relatively flat stomach. I probably couldn't run a good marathon, but I would make it to the finish. Hell, I can run from terminal 5 to terminal 1 when the jump seat has been deferred and still make my commute in time.

Edit to add: I'm 5'10", and last time I weighed my self, I was 173lbs.

5'10. 150lbs. Would probably drop dead before the end of a marathon. The interesting thing is that this data point does not change the fact that a high BMI is correlated with sleep apnea. We're not talking about taking anyone's medical away, are we? We're talking about screening for a treatable medical condition based on a proven correlation. I just do not see the fuss. If it were proven that being rather pale and shrimpy put one at higher risk for a medical condition I'd be lining up to get it checked out, even if I was totally sure that I was the exception.

Just checked mine, according to the online calculator I have a BMI of 19.7. That's the lower end of the healthy scale, I need to excercise more. My metabolism allows me to eat whatever I want and not gain weight, but that isn't necessarily heathy. What if someone is too skinny and has trouble sleeping?
