Tip the Damned Maid! (An article about tipping)

The beauty of this thread is that it makes it clear who the scumbags are.

I don't think it's as much as "scumbags" over the need for our culture to have a chat, like we're doing, about the idea of gratuities.

Personally, I'd like a system where it was included or programmed right into the price so if one does tip, it's clearly seen as a gratuity for going above and beyond rather than fully customary because it can be confusing.

Some airport Burger Kings have a tip jar. Which is hilarious because tipping at a fast food joint isn't particularly customary. But Chipotle, a company that have the illusion of caring a lot more about "first quality" than Burger King doesn't have a tip jar.

Why would I tip the Starbucks cashier that grabbed a cup, pivoted, and dispensed a tall cup of "Pike Place Roast" but I'd happily tip the tattooed barista at Press Coffee (Scottsdale, it's awesome!) that milked a design of a tulip in my caffe latte in a ceramic mug.

I tip when I have cash. Sometimes I don't, and in that case, I load/unload my own bags, and I go about my day. There's no reason to feel like a "scumbag" if you're fresh out of $1s, or feel unnecessarily judged. A simple "Sorry sir, I'm all out, I'll get you next time" suffices, and I guarantee the van driver doesn't think twice about it.

Tipping maids? Never have, sorry. Didn't know that was really a thing.

Mountains out of molehills.

Having a chat and someone saying that they don't like tipping is one thing. Actually not tipping is another. I have no tolerance for people who screw people out of money.

Yeah I'm about the same way. I usually grab a 20 to break and keep in my wallet for tipping the van drivers. Sometimes I forget or spend in on other things. My heart is not going to break for the van driver if he doesn't get a tip. If I have it I'll tip him, if not, oh well.

I'm sure as poop not going to made to feel bad about it by the driver or any one else...especially from self assumed paragons of everything that is aviation or right about previous generations.

As someone who spent 3+ years driving crews to hotels in a van, I can assure that my heart did not break when I wasn't tipped. Like I said before, it was just a nice bonus. Not expected at all.

As it should be. I got stiffed delivering pizzas often. Sure it miffed me a little and was frustrating, but what can you do. There is no obligation other than some antiquated social arrangement.

I made the mistake of asking the van driver for some 'facepalm-worthy' bad crew van stories and I haven't felt so embarrassed.

Is there anything you've not done? (non-flippant; I just didn't know you'd been a hotel driver too)

Can't say I had too many awful ones. I was driving corporate crews though. There was a really bad time in the mid-2000s when morale at one of the fractionals was in the sewer (Flight Options, IIRC). Those crews were more miserable than anything else. Not necessarily rude.

That was from my nearly 4 years of working at FBOs in OAK and SJC non-consecutively. So not airline crews, but professional flight crews nonetheless (and a few weekend warriors). But yeah, corporate, 135 cargo, aircraft sales, aerial mapping. Really, I shoulda just come to the 121 world in 07 when I finished my degree.

But hindsight being what it is, I suppose I made the decisions I did because they seemed right at the time.

Tips as a de motivator

I am walking past one of the worst Popeyes Chickens on earth at Detroit airport.

There's an empty tip jar.

The employees probably don't give a poop because they're not making tips so they probably, I assume, do a worse job.

If there wasn't an expectation of tips to reward exceptional service like any other non-airport Popeyes, would it be so bad?

Random thoughts.

Ahhh.

And yes, that's basically what we all do.

All I can say is that as a former server, I worked my ass off for my 15%. There wasn't even an expectation of free money, even when my base wage was $2.13/hr.

Is being "cheap" a bad thing? I'm pretty sure no one ever went broke being cheap. I actually take it as a compliment. That being said, I don't use airport vans or stay in hotels often. I don't eat out much either since I'm cheap.

I'm flying a high profile NHL charter this evening. Do I tip the line guys? :)

I'm not sure Popeyes has servers. Maybe they do, I dunno.

Inflation, man.
Nope, that was when the normal minimum wage was $5.15/hr. I was down at $2.13/hr because the expectation was that most of my earnings would come from tips. However, that was legal only for certain types of service workers (i.e., waitstaff, not van drivers and housekeepers), and the $2.13/hr+tips still had to meet or exceed the established minimum wage (CA is an exception; when I was a waiter there, I made full minimum wage plus tips).

Tip your servers well; the crazy tipping culture we have has literally driven their wages down to the point many don't even receive a paycheck every 2 weeks.
