New Airplane for ATN

Alright, since ATN is going all "old man I'm retired from airlines" on us, he's gotta buy a personal plane.

We need ideas here, then a formal vote, we'll say next week. The community picks his airplane, then he has to buy it.

I say he buys a King Air 350. One, who doesn't love Beech. Two, lot of our young posters need multi time, what better than to fly out to ATL, and get some shared time on the 350 so ATN can still get that crew dynamic he's gonna be missing.

He helps the young JCers and he is obligated to end every post with "chicks dig beta".

I think toddler is looking for something where he can sit in the back, and have someone up front pay him for the privilege of flying his butt around. But still cheap, and something he can get insurance for a 250 hour pilot to do that. 1975 Arrow.

Dude, I hadn't thought about making them pay me. Good call! :)

I'm leaning heavily towards a Baron, although Tracy is trying to talk me into a Cirrus. I probably won't be buying anything until later this year, though.

Cool as a Baron sounds, even with cheaper gas, it still costs a ton per hour. Might as well go for a Pilatus. You would probably charter it out for enough to cover a good chunk of your expenses...

Skip the pilot, just get a Cirrus....

Wouldn't the red tape with the feds be a nightmare to be able to charter it out? I definitely don't have time to deal with that, and I don't think there are any aircraft management companies at the local field who could do it for me.

Leasing it dry to an existing operator shouldn't be hard. And single aircraft 135 operations aren't too bad, looked into it myself. Just don't have the time

If it were me I'd get a Globe Swift... Or maybe a Decathalon. But if your looking for something practical, I'd go with a C182 or maybe a C210... On floats.

So if you're going to travel, get a twin. Yes, it costs more, but much like not having insurance, do you really want to have your last thought to be "FUUDGE, really wish I hadn't been so cheap" (except it wasn't fudge) as you descend into a low overcast as a glider.

Can't go wrong with a Commander 1000. ;-)

If you're putzing around local area, get a piece of art or history.

I'm not sure how serious this conversation actually is, but I'll throw my two cents out there anyway.

I ran the numbers a thousand times and decided a P210 was the perfect plane for what I needed. Pressurized, known ice, air conditioning, et al. What I found though, was after many years of flying twins and most of those turbine, I could not get past the heeby jeebies of flying behind that one, single engine at night and in crappy weather. Despite all logic and common sense telling me otherwise, I'm just a big wimp so it's getting exchanged for something else. YMMV

I have pretty extensive experience with all different models / derivations of the 210. Just stay away from the T210s and you will be fine. Those things have gremlins like you wouldn't believe. And it's funny looking back at my original post... I recommended 2 practical airplanes that I've experienced engine failures in.

If I had the cash I'd buy a King Air and pay someone else to fly it when I didn't feel like it.

"That takeoff was fun Steve, you have yourself a nice evening. I'm going back for a nap. Make sure you wake me up ten mins out. I might take the landing on the way back tomorrow afternoon but I'll let you know."
