Manifold Propeller Check

I bet you kick your own ass for selling them now. My dad had a '56 210, no posts, with a big ole blower hanging out of the hood. I'm pretty sure he wants to be buried in it.

The Bel Air, yes. The truck, no. Damned thing caught fire a couple times when I had it. Dad never could get the electrical totally sorted out on that thing.

I would hope that a halfway competent pilot could determine the functionality or lack thereof of the engine instruments by their normal behavior through the runup, without cycling the prop multiple times.

You would hope so. Where I teach they require us to cycle basically 4 times... 3 for manifold pressure, oil pressure, and govern, then a feather check. The props take a beating, and we've had to send one prop to the overhaul shop 3 times in the last year....

I wish I was joking!! At the end of last year in one of our meetings we all got goofy "awards." I got an award for "Most DA42 flights cancelled." I think I had upwards of 50 flights in the twin cancelled last fall. I was not happy... :fury: Although, there were other issues besides prop issues. The prop overhaul issues were mostly resolved by August for the time being... *knocks on wood*

I'm sure that those two things have absolutely nothing to do with the other.

Eh, I'm not so sure about that. There is continuous stress imposed on those prop blades by cycling them upwards of 10-15 times a day that wouldn't normally be so great if Dr. Joe Smoe was flying, and cycling them once or twice every other day. Of the 3 or 4 times it was sent off for overhaul, only one was due to the shop installing an improper piece of hardware in the prop hub. The other times, were cracks, and delamination issues of the steal sheath. For anyone wondering, I'm talking about MT propellers with the glass fiber wrapped wood core. At one point or another, every single propeller we've had on our multis have been sent off early for overhaul/repair.

Other than the props, what kind of problems do you have? When I was there the airframe was pretty low trouble, just the thielert motors gave us headaches.

For the Super Ds equipped with MTs, MT wanted you to do the gov check at 1500 RPM instead of doing it with the Mag check at 1800...

Even after that, we would only do the check on the first flight of the day. It's not like it wasn't about to get the piss rung out of it anyway...
