Why wear the monkey suit?

It's the 21st century, khakis and a nice company polo with a north face style winter jacket should be all that's needed now. This isn't the golden age, no one cares. Besides I would be a cleaner look anyway. It's uncomfortable and too expensive. Most people like more unprofessional trying to look professional in the suit. Let's do away with them!

Yeah, and cops should dress like this.

I wouldn't care for wearing the same uniform as somebody at Best Buy.

Ain't gonna happen.

The uniform came into existence because people were too obsessed about outward appearance. We live in a time of judgement based solely on your looks.

Try flying to a foreign country without a uniform on. They'd arrest you for flying an aircraft not being a pilot. The certificates don't matter. Only the uniform, with stripes. All 4 stripes matter. Ideally the FO should have 4 stripes to. Otherwise he's not a pilot either.

If I'm not mistaken, studies still show the validity of a uniform in high stress or emergency situation because it gives people an easy identifier of authority or in some cases, safety. I'd be all for the polo/slacks look because of the comfort factor but I also don't mind the uniform as is. I will never understand why guys get so wound up over the hat thing, though. Either way, I agree about the cost. Upping uniform stipends and/or higher quality items would be awful helpful.

Funny I've always heard this but I've never worn a uniform on any of my international trips.

What monkey suit? I wear a Banana Republic shirt with no ties, no hats, no blazer.

The question posed was, why wear a suit when you are the pilot of an airliner.

Not, reply with an outfit that looks like some passenger in a generic business casual outfit. ;)

Can't imagine attempting to corral passengers after a nighttime off-runway evacuation down the slides in such nondiscreet attire. I hate to dress-up, but the uniform at an airline has several functions and I consider even that to be one of them.

I don't mind the uniform too much, I just wish my company would update our winter jackets so I don't look like a truck driver...

Are you kidding me? Fly into a foreign country, and EVERYBODY calls you "Captain", regardless of stripes.
