Hi,

Has anyone have any info on A.lan John.son or Ca.rol Joy.ner or Pat Car.ey for their initial CFI? How are they like? Their fees are around $1000...

The third person you named is a dick. He falls asleep while your trying to teach, and he's the most ignorant DPE I've ever met. He's a perfect example of the hazardous attitudes.

For a thousand bucks one can study harder and do it with the FSDO for free, no?

Not sure why you chopped up the names, but when I instructed, A. Johnson was avoided by our school, and C. Joyner had a reputation as tough but fair.

Thanks for the info guys! Yeah, I was thinking money for the checkride but thats just way too much. I was going to request with FSDO here but they just gonna say "too busy".

Can you tell me more about Johnson?

I did both my CFI-A and CFI-I checkride with Carol Joyner. She is great. I would avoid A. Johnson. I don't know him personally and I have never met him, so I can't really give you my own personal opinion on what his character is like, but, from what I've heard from a hoard of people is that he has a reputation of failing you on the first try so he can teach you a lesson and then charge you again for the re-examination. A good example of this is how he failed a candidate because his lazy eights didn't end in the exact same altitude on the way back up - despite the student properly teaching the maneuver and having passed his oral. Stand your ground and tell the LA FSDO that you insist on getting them for your examination, and eventually they will just assign you to someone else.

Call FSDO. Make appointment. Examine Free. Rinse. Repeat for CFII and MEI.
If LAX FSDO "unavailable", go back to step one, but call different FSDO.

I've heard this as well about A. Johnson.

Pat doesn't fall asleep. lol Its a thing he does to see how you as a new instructor will handle a student who does something like falls asleep. (Fatigue, lack of interest etc etc)
Pat gives a fair checkride and yes he can be a hard ass, but he is fair.
I did my CFI Initial with him and aside from a helluva a long day (started at 0630 and ended around 2000) he covered all the areas in a fair manner.
The only "unfair" thing he tried on me was "stuck throttle" over the water off Palos Verdes. He snatched the POH (or what he thought was the POH) and put it down next to his left knee. A friend had educated me about this trick of his so I had planted a dummy POH within his reach and kept the real POH where only I could readily reach it.
After I pulled out the genuine POH and showed him the serial number matched the airplane, I taught him the supplemental water ditching procedure and then made it back to shore anyway.

At the end of the ride, he gave me a card with his email and home phone number on it. I hear he does that with all CFI Initials who pass. He also tried to hire me for his flight school before it was all said and done. :)
I like Pat. However, as others have said before me, if you know your stuff, you will be fine. If you don't...well.

Pat's fee back when I took his ride was I think 500. Its probably higher now though

Hello, Go for carol if you can. She is booked far in advance, for good reason. Alan is wide open, you'll find out why. Avoid at all costs.

Don't know him.

Van Nuys FSDO is letting Mark Boss do CFI initials now btw.

I did my ATP/Citation checkride with Mark, great ride and very up front about everything. (Although there is a very funny 'offline storytelling only' component to that experience)
