My dad, who flew B-29s, C-54s, and SA-16s in the USAF, crashed three airplanes...and that was pretty ordinary for the USAF of the 50s and 60s.

When I went to AF Safety School, they showed an excerpt from the 1950s Annual safety reports showing several Class A mishaps *per day*. Very different times in aviation today.

Look at the NTSB website on any given day of any given month of any given year. Multiple aircraft accidents/incidents occur daily all over the country.
