Instrument Checkride Tomorrow

Flush!

Well-Known Member
Hey guys,

I'm doing my Navlog for my Instrument checkride tomorrow, and I ran into an issue. The most direct route to our planned destination has an "Unusable Route Segment". I've been reading online that you can still possibly fly these, if you're in a plane with RNAV (which we are). Should I avoid the unuasble route segment, or can I fly it?

Anyone know where I can find this in the FAR/AIM? I can't find reference to it anywhere!

Technically you can still use the unusable if you have appropriate RNAV GPS equipment onboard, but, if you choose to go that route you had better brush up on the FAR/AIM reasoning behind it; if the examiner asks. Personally, I would go the longer way around, that has usable segments for your ride, but that's just my personal opinion. Look AIM 4-4-4, and one other that is escaping my brain at the moment

That is more of an ATC thing than a pilot thing. But yeah, it means that one of the navaids defining the route is not working. So you can use the route GPS, or if you don't have GPS, you aren't getting that routing anyway. Just be aware that some navaid ain't workin', and point that out in the NOTAMs. Unless there was terrain near the route, I can't imagine many circumstances I wouldn't take the more direct route in the real world. (Who are we kidding, I'm always asking for direct...)

On the same note, be sure you know how to identify the FAF's on every approach, with and without GPS, assuming it isn't an RNAV one.

Yeah, 4-4-4 is Amended Clearances. I can bring that up if I need to talk to that but I was hoping to read the section of the FAR/AIM that specifically addresses unusable routes. I can't find it in the FAR/AIM, or the IFH. Strange...

I'm pretty sure he does. I'm guessing that's why he asked me to plan this route. He's also the chief of flight safety at a 141 school, so if I fly that route, I better know why it's okay to do so. I'm sure it'll come up.

I opted to fly the route for the plan, and I passed. If anyone is in the same situation, just know that if you have RNAV, you can still fly the route segment.
