Foreflight + ADS-B

I'm curious if anyone has utilized the Military Flight Bag offered by Foreflight? I'm also interested in the ADS-B features that Stratus offers. The plane I'm training to fly is already equipped for almost everything the receiver offers, but the NEXRAD Wx overlay and grabbing updated METARs/TAFs/NOTAMs seems like it could be a good SA tool. Or overkill? The US has nationwide coverage for ADS-B, but how is the rest of the world? Would it even be useful on deployment?

How are you guys using iPad technology in the cockpit? Foreflight seems like a popular option, but I know a few other companies offer similar products, which may open the door to other (less expensive) tablet options. Do you prefer the size of the iPad Mini over the larger Air?

Thanks.

Mini is the perfect size IMO. you can get fore flight performance with the fltplan.com app with out a subscription. And you get a choice of receivers.

I love fore flight. I use it at my airline in the summer time for Wx avoidance and route planning since we have canned routes and dispatch rarely does anything but plan you right through the Wx. I have always wondered about the ads-b. I can only use mine on the ground. Would love to have it in the air too.

I think in terms of the tablet and software, I am sold on the iPad mini with Foreflight. I received an e-mail from Sporty's about ADS-B overseas.

The following features will work overseas:
  • GPS receiver - provides position and moving map worldwide
  • AHRS - backup attitude indicator is totally self-contained
  • Flight data recording - also self-contained
The following features will not work outside the US:
  • Weather - the radar, METARs, TAFs, etc. are transmitted by a network of ground stations. These are provided by the US government, and this system is not in place in Europe, Asia, etc. at this time.
  • Traffic - Stratus 2 receives traffic both air-to-air (directly from other airplanes) and from ground stations. The ground stations are US-only, so you will not receive those traffic messages. However, you will still receive the air-to-air traffic messages. It works, but only sometimes.

Skyway-style!

Our routes were so canned that they just printed out routes and left a stack of them in the pilot lounge so you could preplan before the release was generated.

Have never used an EFB or ipad in the jet, but I know those who have used just straight up foreflight with apparently good results. A lot of guys use them in our low lot Vipers that don't have much in the way of navigational goodies, ie no moving map (or area boundary indications) and you have to manually input waypoints into the INS post start. What airframe are you headed to?

We use ForeFlight and the Stratus two in a Lear 45. We also have an original iPad mini that is starting to slow down but it still works. If you go with the Stratus understand it will only work with ForeFlight. Meaning it will not provide any information including GPS info to other apps. We still use the Jepp app so we also bought a the Dual XGPS160 to provide GPS location services to the Jepp app as well as any other app that might need it. Between the Stratus and the XGPS it's a pretty sweet setup. I'd also recommend getting the external ADS-B antenna for the Stratus. The ADS-B reception is so much better with it. We also have the external GPS antenna but that's not as necessary as the ADS-B one. Also get the newest iPad mini with at least 64 gigs of space. (I'd get the 128gb version that way you'll have room for movies too)

I'll be flying the P-8.

Thanks for the advice! I was really curious if 32 gigs would be enough. I'm not really sold on the iPad 3, all it offers is the finger scanner thing. However, the #2 only offers a 16 or 32 gig option. I'll probably go with the #3/ 64 gig. A few years from now I won't miss the extra $100 I paid.

I love the idea of the Stratus. But, I wouldn't get much use out of it until I'm home for an instructor tour where I would be doing all my flying over US soil again.

Might help you avoid some of that flight school traffic in the practice area south of CRG. And I'd get as many gigs on it as you can. 64 is good but 128 is better.

While not officially approved by AMC yet, our MAFFS unit has them approved with ADSB in the cockpit for firefighting.

We all are just using iPads for pubs at this time.

We are thinking about putting a stratus ads-b and fore flight In our Lear 40. I was wondering where you placed the receiver in your Lear 45? You also said you used an external gps antena with your stratus. Where did you place that? I know there is a gps reception problem in the Lear with the heated Windows.
