The U2 frontman and four friends land safely Wednesday despite his Learjet 60 shedding its rear door at 8,000 feet over the German countryside. Bono and U2 are performing at the Bambi Awards

LR60 baggage door has a pretty robust locking mechanism, and it's pretty obvious if it's not been closed properly. I'd like to know what led up to this. How much damage did it do to the surrounding area?

Could have been worse, could've been the other baggage door/emergency exit. Pressurized area, opens directly forward of the right engine inlet. Also I'm pretty sure there is an annunciator light that indicates whether or not the aft baggage door is closed and latched.

Honestly, I figured a band as big as U2 would have had something more than a Lear60. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's a hell of a plane, but it's more of a poor mans business jet then, say, a Gulfstream, that can actually reach places where they tour. And yeah, had that been the emergency door on the side, RIGHT in front of the engine, this would have been a lot worse than just dusting the country side with some dirty chonies.

Perhaps it's a charter, there are a lot of people/bands/groups/corporations that you'd expect to have their own aircraft but for whatever reason they choose to charter instead. And then there are those that shouldn't own an airplane at all for any number of reasons.

Surprised Bono was in a Lear. I'd think he could at least get a G-V.

BTW one of the best bands of all time. Love them.
