Airline Weekly has calculated the 15 most profitable airlines and the 15 least profitable airlines in the world, and U.S. carriers make up nearly half of the list of the most profitable.

Two low-cost U.S. airlines, Spirit Airlines and Allegiant Air, rank second and third. Regional carrier Republic Airways is fourth, and Alaska Airlines is sixth.

Delta Air Lines ranks 10th, Southwest Airlines is 13th and American Airlines Group is 14th.

On the unhappy side of the ledger, there’s a preponderance of Asia-Pacific carriers – 11 of the 15 carriers are based in that part of the world.

We also find it interesting that one of the biggest global markets, Europe, is barely represented in either list. There are two, and both are low-fare airlines based in Ireland: Ryanair, one of the most profitable, and Norwegian Air, one of the least profitable.

Airline Weekly suggests that we should consider capacity when we consider profits — seats in Southeast Asia are up 57 percent since 2010, compared to a 2 percent increase in the U.S. market.

It shouldn’t also escape notice that Spirit and Allegiant, two ultra low-fare carriers, are Nos. 2 and 3 on the most profitable list.

The margin measures operating profits as a percentage of operating revenues. For most, it covers the 12 months ending June 30. Here’s the list:

It's not total revenue, but a percentage of earnings.
