Falcon 20 and Lear SIC's / Kalitta charters

They invited me to an interview a while back, I decided that it wasn't what I was looking for. If I remember correctly, first year pay offered was 33k, second year 36k.

Kalitta isn't known for being a well paying gig, sadly.

True story. But it sure beats regional 1-3 year pay.

Not exactly. I'm paid a little more as regional FO as I was a YIP FO freight hauler.

And that biz is exactly that of a tuckers. My truck driver uncle pretty much lived the same life as I did. The schedules, the loads, the destinations. He sat in LRD waiting on the next haul to drive all through the night to Detroit just like I did. And yes he even made more money than the captains I flew with. Imagine that.

It is interesting work though. Not for everyone that's for sure. Great experience.

They restructured the pay last year and are almost strictly doing air ambo with the Lears now. The Falcons are still doing freight, though.

Interesting. Any chance you care to elaborate the pay structure?

Sure, send me a PM so we don't derail this thread anymore than it already is.

That's exactly how I saw it. Cool experience but nothing I'd want to do long (er) term.

I really enjoined my time across the field at USA Jet... But, that being said I was on the -9. It also led to 'bigger and better things' - ie, job offer at Omni and jetBlue. (I went to B6 of course.)

Your mileage may vary though. I gave my Blue Dart to a freight dog friend from The Jet and he got the down check from the hurling folks. I wrote a glowing letter for another friend from The Jet who has moved on to charter - also a 'negatory' from HR.

You can't beat the money compared to the regional world., but none of the YIP box haulers are time building airlines. Make sure that you have the basic hiring minimums at a LCC, Major, or Legacy. At least 3000 TT with jet and glass before you start. (My opinion, of course, based on no facts at all...)

I think that I only flew 270-300 hours a year.

Kalitta Charters hiring again, thanks to this forum I got hired on the last round and hope to return the favor, just finishing up sim training.

http://kalittacharters.atsondemand....on=512546.viewjobdetail&CID=512546&JID=477573

Candidates must have a minimum of 1000 total hours, a Commercial Multi Engine Instrument Pilot license, Radio Operator License, first class medical certificate, passport, and a High School Diploma (an aviation degree is preferred.) Additionally, a candidate must be able to pass an extensive background check.

If you don't have passport or radio license then they give you until the first day of ground training to get that squared away.

I haven't started flying yet so probably am not the best person to ask about QOL etc, but there's some info in this thread, I'm sure Erik will chime in if needed. Solid company from what I've experienced so far.

Are you in the Lear or the Falcon? I always imagine the Lear would be nice because you can't load 5k lbs of freight or 50 bags of seat covers in it.

Haha yeah you're right. You start in a Lear because they're a bit harder to get the hang of apparently, then falcon 20 upgrade in 6-8 months depending on the need of the company. They still do some cargo in the Lear but it's obviously relatively small things.

You will start in the Lear and move to the Falcon when the need comes (6-12mo). The QoL is all relative, for those that live in YIP, it is quite good, for those that commute, it is terrible. I have grossed and bulked the Lear out, so don't let the other guys fool you into thinking you're only carrying shoe boxes and envelopes.

Kalitta is essentially a revolving door. Management believes that you should not stay here for more than 2-3 years (no joke), you shall get your time and move on.

They will take less than 1k hours but not without an internal recommendation. They are hurting for pilots, much like the rest the 135 operators. You will fly around 300 hours per year.

Anyone know if you go in with higher times (4500TT) what the upgrade to captain is like? Quite a lot of cargo time in the SA227. Just trying to get some damn jet PIC.

=J-

We need captains right now, I believe insurance mins are around 3000hrs for lear and 2500 for falcon, you'll probably start out as SIC then if they think it's appropriate they'll probably get you on as a PIC. Kalitta Charters doesn't really like street captains that's why the mins for that is 6000hrs so if you go through ground school and fly for a bit as SIC then you'll probably be on your way to captain I'd say. But you have to be on top of your • and know everything if you're going to be a captain because Kalitta Charters wants you to know the plane inside and out. It probably doesn't hurt to apply.

I know that they have a 747 that flies to 'places.' I can't imagine the pay on that is chump change.

That's Kalitta Air, which is a separate entity. There's Kalitta Air, Kalitta Charters, and Kalitta Charters II all of which are completely separate companies. Both charters companies owned by Doug Kalitta and Kalitta Air is owned by Connie Kalitta. And yeah those 747s fly anywhere and everywhere. I was on shuttle to airport once with a 747 pilot coming home he told me some interesting stories!
