Delta Flight Museum ATL

Rumors are all over the place with the 88 upgrade. I've heard everything from its a $180 million loss for the supplier to just a small problem getting the new technology to communicate with the FCP. The only solid sign I've seen is they are working on it daily in the MD90 FTD. Was invited to take it peek one evening, looks very nice.

It's been a long while since my last visit...gotta fix that.

Delta Employees, Retirees, Buddies, Neighbors of EMployees, People on the friends and family cellular plan of employees, former school teachers of employees... basically everyone associated in any way with DAL EXCEPT ENDEAVOR AIR employees.
Dogs, and regional pilots, keep off the grass...

Not true. I walked @scooter2525 through there as a guest and I paid for him.

Let's not float that rumor.

I went to the museum before and after the renovation.

Before, there was lots of cool stuff, and plenty of memorabilia to keep the Northernjets, Westernjets and Northeasternjets crowd happy. It was a little musty and a little "aviation museum on the side of the road-ish", but not a bad way to kill an hour and a half.

After? They did a fantastic job renovating the hangar. It's a beautiful restoration. But it seems like half the stuff that was in the old museum isn't there. I did the whole thing in 45 minutes flat. It reminded me of visiting the Udvar-Hazy after it first opened. You rattled around that place and could see everything in nothing flat.

I'm hoping this is just a case of filling in the new space with stuff that was put in boxes during the resto. The do have two of the most awesome airplanes ever built sitting outside it what look to be perfect condition. Someone spent some serious coin on it, and it seems like it is shaping up very nicely.

BTW, if you are staying over at the Holiday Inn Mall of America in MSP, you can go visit the NWA History Centre in the basement of the Wings Credit Union next door. It only takes a few minutes, but they have some neat stuff, and you can get a "Hermon the Duck" hat.

We're currently restoring the DC-8 engine here at the TOC. Its a tad rusty and in pieces, but it's going to look good when it heads back over. I did some of the work on the DC-9 tail that's on display. The museum is constantly looking for more stuff to put into the museum. There has been a rumor that there is interest in buying back the Convair at Graceland.

...if you need to talk to some R-2800 guys, let me know. I happen to be one, and know a few others.

Oh. THAT kind of Convair. Elvis. Check. Never mind, couldn't add it up.

The 880 was powered by General Electric CJ-805-3s. They were straight turbojets that were the civilian version of the J79 found on the B-58 Hustler. They only served the purpose of turning kerosene into smoke, speed and NOISE!

Anyone interested in going this weekend? I would like to fly up on Saturday but I would need a ride from a local GA airport...

There is simply no better use of dead dino juice, except of course, a 990.

And a big bonus for annoying the greenies.

@H46Bubba @Trip7 @Cptnchia Interesting encounter this morning. Was working a flt to ATL this AM and a man from first class came up to the flight deck and said he was enroute to TechOps to discuss the MD88/90 upgrade. I don't want to post the city or the vendor but basically he said that the current provider was not meeting our needs and his company was going to discuss updating our boxes. I asked him if that was a FMS only upgrade or a full panel upgrade and he stated that we want a full panel, which his company can do, but they typically just upgrade FMSs. This coincides with what I've heard from numerous people that an FMS with a GPS upgrade would satisfy NextGen requirements. My money is on that over a full panel upgrade.

True. And apparently 10 of the MD90s already have GPS and Pegasus FMS.

Wish they could outfit the entire fleet with MD90 Engines and FADEC too
