Best IFR home study course

I'm going to be purchasing a home instrument course here soon. Wondering what other people have had luck with. What's the best and why? Sporty's, King, something else??
 
For actually learning what you need to know? Anything but Sheppard. Get it the week before you take the written if you must
 
I'm a big fan of just reading the Instrument Flying Handbook and Instrument Procedures Handbook. It's all the same content as the other IFR courses, but directly from the FAA and free.

King schools if you want to learn.. they teach you a lot and very easy to consume. If you want face pass and just want to pass the written than go for sheppards air.
 
The Sporty's course is pretty good. A tad boring, but a lot better than John and Martha. Also, you may want to consider a copy of "Everything Explained to the Professional Pilot" in addition. The author gives some excellent, plain English explanations of instrument procedures/regs plus the book will serve as an excellent reference for the rest of your career including sections dedicated to explaining 135 and 121 regs.
 
The FAA books and Rod Machados Instrument Pilots Handbook. The FAA books can be a bit dry, Rod can be too much of a cheese ball. With FAA books and Rod's book you will have something to suit the mood you are in. For the test prep Sheppard air is THE way to go, after you have been through the books a few times. Do not solely rely on the test prep to serve as your knowledge base, read the books and talk with a CFII.

Learning: FAR/AIM, FAA Instrument Procedures Handbook, FAA Instrument Flying Handbook... I found most of my students really do enjoy the Jeppesen Instrument/Commercial book the most. As a CFII, I am incredibly fond of the Instrument Flight Training Manual.
 
I hated the Jeppesen Inst/Comm book. It was most of the same info as the IFH/IPH with a ton of filler and a little rewording. And a huge pricetag.

IFH/IPH. Available as PDFs, or in book form for $cheap. Exactly what the FAA wants you to know.

And pretty decent, too, I must say.
