Island Air Captain - - Honolulu, Hawaii

Made it to the interview, and at the end of the day, they pulled me in the office and said they were going to "pass" at this time. A little surprised, disappointed for sure. No reason given. Anyone else on here make it through the interview, PM me. Or if you have an upcoming interview, PM me. Overall, great company with big plans, lots of expansion, and sorry that I'm missing out on the opportunity.

That sucks. Who was doing the interviews?

HR lady, the Asst. Chief Pilot (GA), and a guy from training/ops. Also met the 5 day old COO and the new CEO. It may be because of the fact that I had a job change about every 12-16 months the last 3 years or so and thought I would be a flight risk (no pun intended).

There is an assistant chief pilot now? Things are a changing.

I didn't take it. The pay vs cost of living, likely hood of being perpetually on reserve, and the opportunities of going directly to mainline were the major factors that swayed my decision.

Can't say enough positive about the people and experience though. It just wasn't the right opportunity for me.

Thanks for the follow up!
My buddy is going there for an interview, any tips youd give on questions they ask?

Sorry for the delayed response.

Very straight forward. Know your 121 regs. Remember you are interviewing for a PIC position, so answer the questions as such. In my opinion, it was very cut and dry.

Sounds like he put it off until after this big announcement comes out at Endeavor. He's never been a captain I'm just looking to prep him as much as possible. The gouges online a good start?

The gouges are a good start, 30q ATP style test, the panel interview is something like:
"tell me about a time when..."
you had a bad situation with a crew,
bad passenger,
you went above and beyond the call of duty,

"what would you do if...."
captain was drunk,
you're flying and the engine catches fire

Where do you see yourself in 5 years,
why are you a good fit for Island Air,
do you do any volunteering

I wish I knew which of these I answered wrong to not get considered for employment, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. Good Luck!

121.436(3) "If serving as pilot in command, has 1,000 hours as second in command in operations under this part, pilot in command in operations under §91.1053(a)(2)(i) of this chapter, pilot in command in operations under §135.243(a)(1) of this chapter, or any combination thereof. For those pilots who are employed as pilot in command in part 121 operations on July 31, 2013, compliance with the requirements of this paragraph (a)(3) is not required."
135.243 Pilot in command qualifications.
(a) No certificate holder may use a person, nor may any person serve, as pilot in command in passenger-carrying operations—
(1) Of a turbojet airplane, of an airplane having a passenger-seat configuration, excluding each crewmember seat, of 10 seats or more, or of a multiengine airplane in a commuter operation as defined in part 119 of this chapter, unless that person holds an airline transport pilot certificate with appropriate category and class ratings and, if required, an appropriate type rating for that airplane.

Caravans don't qualify :-( Damn it

Maybe because you don't meet the 121.436 requirements?

i interviewed and was offered the job. Straight forward interview, nothing tricky, it was basically just hanging out with the HR, CP and director of instructing.
Tmaat questions, situational flying questions, asked if I volunteer, which I do so I go lucky.
Sim was a redbird sim, very straight forward, single engine 182 I believe.

I'm currently in a lifer crj f/o position, I was applying for a Captain postion which they told me I would be interviewing for. then during the interview it turned into a first officer position, with a chance to upgrade within a year. So I was a bit disapointed. For me it would be a downgrade in pay, but maybe a chance to upgrade faster? I dont even know, kinda a big maybe.

They did that same CA -》 FO trick on the phone too. It's tough because all his fam is in Hawaii, he was born there, but he already has a regional job making promises they can't keep.

I'm in the same boat. Family, born and raised. I think if your buddy really wants to live in Hawaii the it could be a great deal. Even if he has to be a f/o again for X amount of years.
My goal is HAL, I think they would value someone that is willing to move back/live in HI. If I didn't have things holding me down I'd be there now
