Anybody else flown with them? What did you think? We have them in one of our 207s. It is certainly taking some getting used to. It reacts really fast to pitch and roll it seems. In turbulence the ball really seems bounce around a lot.

But minus that complaint I really enjoy it. Having a display of wind speed a direction is awesome. Especially with airports with no weather reporting.

I've used them in a 210 I was delivering a few years back.

As far as "reacting quickly'... do you want it to react slowly? I'm sure the ball doesn't bounce around any faster than a bubble in a curved piece of glass.

The only thing I didn't like was the lack of an actual VSI scale. It was just a digital number in the setup I used, like -1200FPM. or soemthing similar.

Otherwise it was fine. There's only so many ways you can represent all the necessary info. If you can fly one you can fly them all. Aspen seems to be a really good plug and play option, modular, expandable.

Maybe quickly is a bad word. I think it is just taking some getting used to.

@ppragman @dbrault17 and a few others flew the 99's with the aspen suite.
I think they did a good job.

You not have the Chelton's out west?
No Cheltons out here. I wish there was. We are working on getting ADS-B units to work with the Garmin 650. When that works we will be replacing the MX20s in the 207s. They are getting old.

I've flown a bit behind the Aspen - it's OK. It's a little small in terms of PFD size, but the interface is nice, just takes a little getting used to.

Aspens are decent. Definitely prefer the Cheltons now that I've started using them, though.

But they're a tiny fraction of the price even just for the purchase, much less the installation, so...

The Aspen really shows its strength when you start adding additional modules.

Yes, with one one module things can be small and crowded.
But if you add a second, or even better the third module, you can dedicate each one to an individual function and it ends up being a much better setup.

I would think that the GDL90 or the freeflight ranger would be pretty plug and play with a 650. I'm jelly of your panel setup, I'd much rather have the GTN650/Aspen combo than steam gauges and a freaking iPad.

Also the MX20 as far as I know is a dead unit. Garmin will not support them any more.

I cant remember what about the setup wasnt working, but they are working the bugs out. It really will be a nice setup once they get it done. Those MX20s are getting old and arent that great. The screens are slowly dying. We have the MX200s in the CASA.

The issue is that proprietary software language Garmin uses. The GDL90 would talk to the GTN 650, but it is not complaint with the final ADS-B rule, which is why the upgrade to the new Freeflight ADS-B boxes. The problem lies in that Garmin will only provide a patch for the MX20 to work with the new non Garmin box as per the original Capstone contract, they are under no obligation to make any of there other systems work with the new Freeflight box.

The best part is when I think it was Aspen reverse engineered the Garmin format to make something talk to Garmin, the next time Garmin released a software update for their piece of hardware they had changed the format so the Aspen box didn't work with it anymore.

Ya because that makes the skies safer!

Garmin is the Apple of aviation.
That's a shame really...
It's been years since I've used their products. I remember when that company was founded by Messers Gar and Min they were just a small team who strived to put out the best products in an effort to make GA a better place.

But I could see how your comparisson would ring true.
