Airbus Nose-up at Abu Dhabi Airport

Happened the same week it came out of paint in GJC, summer of '08 sometime. The fuel panel started smoking when they started transferring out of the fuselage tank on descent. Was to be a quick turn in PHX and then up to Reno and most crews never took a tail stand along. With 1K of fuel in the back plus the Howards and no cargo, add a lectro tug and there you have it.
That story sounds familiar. I was a captain around that time, memory is going.

Our latest new hire at my current shop was the SIC if that helps jog your memory.

They were for the ole ATR 72s at ASA. If the stand wasn't in place when the herd moved aft to deplane. Well...

On the "bigger" aviation devices it is just a visual reference. Imagine the amount a weight that would come smashing down on one of those little sticks. Squarsh.

Eh, UPS uses a pretty large tripod contraption on the A300s that is jacked, what looks to be quite substantially into the tail. No way that plane is going anywhere...

Either way, only a moron tips a plane over

I wish I had a tail stand at Ameriflight on the metro. I almost became one of those morons a few times.

I thought that tail stands were used to calculate weight and balance. If you can remove the tail stand without assistance of a pry bar, it was safe to fly.
Back in the ramp days , I remember countless times waiting for the crew to get in and I still had to lift with my back to pull the stand out...

Never seemed right to me

They actually did have them out in CVG, once the ad-hoc business died off they got pulled back out of the planes.

Yep sure did. Those were tense moments when they dropped a 900 lb skid at the door!

...150lbs of ballast in the nose and me sitting in the stairs hoping to have a good outcome. :)

In the Metro?? I feel like that thing is pretty resilient. I do wish we had tail stands for peace of mind though. God, that'd be a terrible noise! BONK!

I carry the same paranoia from the 99 though and haven't messed around with getting it butt heavy at all. Haven't had to deal with pallets though... The 99 terrified me during loading after hearing all the stories in indoc.

Yea pallets is what I was worried about.
