RAH TA Vote Results

I'm not sure I've ever agreed with @Seggy in the few years I've been here, but he has a point. If we (as a regional group) want to be paid and treated like professionals, we have to act like professionals. And that includes not misusing or abusing the rules. Fly the contract, live the contract, and go home!

On a second and lighter, back to the subject note.. You knew it was coming:

Yeah I thought it was simple until I started flying the plane I am on now.

Energy management is pretty important with the 737-800/900 series as well as the 757-300 (even if it was a 757-200 they may have been asking because of the crosswind limitation we don't know as we weren't there) and as the plane is so long it can be 'sporty' with gusty winds as the back of the plane may be doing something different than the front. So while I understand you get a wind from tower when you check in, if I ask for it again, I don't expect a response like that from the tower as there could have been a plethora of reason why I'm asking for it again. When it's windy we are constantly adjusting our target speed down the approach and when we are doing that we could have pretty tight margins.

I'm all for a relaxed atmosphere with our ATC counterparts, this was out of line from the facts we have.

Oh good grief! Lighten up, Francis!

When queried by another pilot (re: I don't talk on GUARD unless I am on fire...) if the suspecting individual was Delta, he replied with "Yes. Move on with your social hour elsewhere kids."

So - hey - I wasn't in HIS cockpit on HIS plane, but he did say yes. Coulda been United or SWA pranking us all.

Kind of like when the cops arrive and ask "Who spray painted the fence?"

"Oh, those other guys".

I've been around for almost 18 years and I don't recall anyone who just doesn't shut off 121.5 when people start yakking away like it's 123.45 or "ducks".

Guard is useless anyway. 90% of the time when anyone has a legit transmission, it gets blocked or people start asking 'so what's going on? What engine? Oh man, what kind of aircraft?" etc.

Of all the pan-pan's and pseudo emergency calls for help, they've always been on tower/ground.

I'd argue in the lower 48 you are never that far from ARTCC or terminal, where an actual voice is residing on that freq. However travel a little north, and up to my ol stomping grounds guard really is worth it's weight in gold. Had I gone down in BF Alaska, there was no coverage from ANC center, however a high flyer, say a DL A330 from DTW, could pick me up and relay...

Back on topic. I'm curious to see what our/the next step is.

Who here has a story about guard being used for an actual serious emergency in the Lower 48? I've heard a couple ELTs and occasionally a crew searching for a frequency but in my short career that's about it.

In my 6.5yrs at the airlines and 15yrs flying total, I have only ever heard 3 REAL emergencies on guard. One was a guy who lost his engine(s) coming in to land and he ended up spinning it in a mile short of the runway and killing himself (that was a hard one to listen to), one was a guy who lost his engine(s) and ditched in a field and survived, and one was a guy who suspected smoke and electrical problems on his plane and I never heard the outcome. And with all of those guys, only one was actually helped by the guys on guard by telling atc his location and the other two were just bored airline pilots asking 50 thousand questions. So yeah, I maintain guard is over rated.

X1000

Seriously, I routinely cancel through someone on center flying over at many of our destinations.

I heard about this on Guard...

AND BOY was Delta not happy about the discussion, sheesh. Guard Police ALL DAY ERR'DAY.

Did the guard police identify themselves as Delta? ;)

There was definitely a serious amount of banter on guard today including guys playing music. I love how the "on guard" people will start accusing the other of being DL while they are just as likely a couple regional guys going after each other.

I've only seen one guy in 7 years at DL say "en guarde" to anyone, fwiw.

I've only listened to one emergency on 121.5 so far when I was in the air.

It was a light single engine airplane that had an unexpected engine failure at a couple thousand feet (something other than running out of gas).

The pilot was transmitting to whatever ATC facility had decided it was their task to take over on 121.5 and he was telling them about what DME and radial off of some VOR he was, and describing where he was looking at putting the plane down, if he couldn't get the engine started in the next minute or two. A road, a river and a north-south field, whatever other description it was so ATC could relay it to get a helicopter over quick in case he got hurt or it all caught on fire.

During this entire 3-4 minute ordeal, there were at least three different guard nazi morons at FL390 who had to put down their coffee and allow their blood pressure to skyrocket while shouting "YOU'RE ON GUARD". To a pilot in distress, that was about to crash. It was unbelievable.

I didn't realize guard was so crazy with people screwing around, I never heard anything flying the islands a few years back. Atlanta Radio leaves something to be desired...

So anyways, we voted our TA down. Today coincidentally happened to be day one of indoc at S5 for myself. There was "rejoicing" alI around the school house. I believe this will be the end of CHQ though. I'd expect the rest of the 145's to be parked at an accelerated rate to staff the 175's that we still have coming from the factory.

I'm guessing everyone who voted no was willing to let the company close down rather than vote the TA in. I didn't read all the TA but I'm not sure exactly what else they expect to get or how long it'll take them to get it.

I'm not gonna go into details, but there was so much loose language it wasn't even funny. That was a big sticking point with myself at least. Honestly, I believe if they clean up the grey areas and get rid of phrases like "the company will attempt to," it would be much better.

The big question is will they polish this up in 3-4 months or 3-4 years.

Well, BB did reiterate that he wasn't panicking about this and that this could take some time. Still has his play book open. Something tells me this isn't over.

The worst part, for me, with people playing "grab ass" on guard is that I'm usually getting a radio call from ATC on COM-1.

Personally, I think it should be a lot more like "911". Only use it when it's absolutely necessary. We've got 123.45 for a reason.

Oh yeah, RAH voted down their TA.

Holy crap, you have been at DL for 7 years now?

I wonder if it's the same one. I overheard a super cub transmitting on guard in a similar fashion while I was enroute to IAH from YYZ. Little Rock approach picked up on it and was talking to him, and I was really shocked to hear the guard police chime in.
