Useless? Have you worked an overwater......or even overland....SAR before where there has been little to no location information, and thus an extremely large search area based on fuel endurance?

Try it sometime. You might get enlightened a bit. And maybe a tad humbled too.

Pretty much why I avoid single engine piston ocean crossings. It's the great big empty out there.
And now, the pooling plastic island of the pacific, even if SAR shows, they won't be able to pick you out amongst the floating flat screens and soccer balls and shopping sacks.
 
@jgheggie, before you look up the database let me update my 8710 to reflect the 1000s of hours I had flying a 777 out of Meigs Field at the age of 12. Shouldn't take long.
