Great lakes airlines

Has anyone heard of Great Lakes possibly removing seats from their airplanes so that they can fall under different FAA rules that will allow them to hire at 250tt? I read an article and was just currious as to when and if this may happen

Scroll down to the airline pilots section and there is a thread titles "Great Lakes pt 135 plans" that will give you as much information that is available ATM

If they do that would be a great opportunity for those guys to go there that can stomach the $15k for that first year.

Well, ive never really heard too many positive things about lakes, but for myself and the rest of us low timers that are out of money i feel this would be a great idea and opportunity even if the pay is terrible. At least we could gain valuable experience

It isn't just the horrendously low pay pay. It's the lies, the no pay for training, no transportation to get to the interview, how terrible their management is, what your life will be like while trying to live on the pay, how your days will go, how little chance you will have to upgrade, how they treat their employees, the fact that they are in serious financial hurt and more. They are the pariah of the industry.

Seriously, did you read the quotes that I posted on the last page of that thread tonight? You still think they are a great idea and opportunity?

Their training dept is second to none. I don't know how it is now but it "used to be" being an ex-Laker was a badge of honor and got you where you needed to go, ie not the left seat of an RJ but the right seat of a Boeing.

I didn't mention their training which is supposed to still be good, but everything else that goes along with that job is shameful and unpalatable, IMO. People need to seek out other options.

At 250 hours you are building experience and time. Lakes is a perfect place for both. Or you could do 50 patterns in a 152 per day with students. The guys who are young and at the majors took the hit early on and didn't spend 10 years at a commuter rotting away.

As for now CFI isnt an option. One money wise, ans 2 i travel a lot for my current job. So if i was to receive a call from lakes, i would absolutely take it so that i could gain hours and experience on someone elses dollar. You have to start somewhere so if i could just get my foot in the door thats definately a start...even if it is with lakes

There's a lot of 91 and 135 VFR/135IFR SIC jobs out there. Try that for now. You can even make a good paycheck.

Landcare Aviation
Desert Winds Air Service
Northern States Aviation
Air America
Keystone Aviation
RC & A of the Carolinas
Aperture Aviation
Air Associates of Kansas
Meisinger Aviation
Williams Aerial & Mapping
Dynamic Aviation
Kucera International

That's just a small list to start that I can think of off the top of my head. Yes most are usually 500TT mins but I know for a fact Landcare will hire around 280TT. Jump piloting is also a easy way to get some hours to help get you up to those mins since drop zones will hire guys with VERY low time. Don't give up too quickly and NETWORK. I owe every single flying job I've had to knowing someone who helped get me the job.

Go tow some banners.

Even if you went there, Lakes would be dead before you could finish training anyway. There's no reason to put yourself through a 121 training event for such little reward.

If you are having a hard time funding the CFI, I recommend this website. http://www.aviationcareerspodcast.com/

there is a link on that website to an entire page of scholarships that anyone can apply for. There are sources out there that offer help and with a little networking you can open more doors. A way better option than being a door mat for a bottom tier regional that as of right now does not even show promise of a future and for good reasons.
