Hey that's my plane. We're all pretty excited things are getting close. Is this artist well-known locally or well respected? Seems like a good concept.

If you end up out here on it at all let me know. There are a few Jetcareers guys out here I think. Mini Meet and Greet at Dukes sounds like fun.

The artist, Sig Zane, is pretty well known out here. He's kind of an Island version of Ed Hardy... but the people that wear his stuff aren't sleazebags.

Is Ohana just an internal regional feeder for Hawaiin, or is it operated independently just using the Hawaiin name?

Just curious if this sort of flying, if mainline, would go senior or junior.

Operated under the Hawaiian name by Empire (think FedEx feeder) so no mainline Hawaiian pilots on the airframe. If it was mainline Hawaiian, I highly doubt any senior pilots would take that large of a pay cut to go from an A330 -> ATR.

The 717 already does this kind of flying. Of course it pays more than a 40 something seat ATR probably would. The 717 is slightly junior in the FO seat and at the bottom end of the captain list, but the high end of the captain list is pretty senior.

That's what I figured. Do they pay decent rates and do you need to be Ohana to get on with them? ha

That's what prompted the question. If the 717 is already doing the flying in house, why have a competing brand, do the same flying? Are the ATR's doing the true feeder routes, getting people from outskirts of islands to the hubs, OGG, KOA, HNL or are they going to replace the 717 flying allowing HAL to deal with pilot attrition internally without new hires?

Seniority makes sense, I was thinking as a mainlander I guess. If I was flying for them and could do short hops all day, make a decent living and be home every night I'd take that over the more "glamorous" international flights.

I believe pay is on par with Empire's normal pay scale. The second part of the question would be for @BobDDuck, but I believe they got them to compete with Island Air in the markets that the 717 is not utilized.

Right now the ATR is just going to Lanai and Molokai. Both have shorter runways (<5000 feet) and while the 717 and DC9 have gone in to both in the past, it beats up the airplanes enough that wasn't cost effective to go there. Also, there isn't much (any) tourist traffic to both those islands so, even done as a round robin trip it was often tough to fill up a 120 seat jet. There is talk that the ATRs will go to West Maui as well, which is too short to land the 717 at. This airport provides great access to the resorts on the northwest coast of the island and cuts out an hour of driving if you come in to OGG.

Currently the contract requires all flying between HNL-LIH, HNL-OGG, HNL-KOA and HNL-ITO be done by Hawaiian pilots. It also has restrictions on the size and weight of any airplanes doing inter island flying for Hawaiian on routes other than those, has block hour restrictions as well as furlough protection wording. The 717 does a fair amount of Maui "hub" flying, going to ITO, KOA and LIH from there. That isn't protected at all and the concern is that they will start subbing ATRs on some of those routes either between peak demand times or all together. The final concern is that the MEC will give away some of the scope protections in place during this next bargaining cycle (that starts in about a year). There are some politics involved I think, and I'm too new to understand it fully, but basically the entire MEC and NC are made up of widebody guys, and mostly commuters at that. There is a fear amongst some inter island pilots that they will trade away a lot of scope protection in order to secure some widebody improvements and commuting protections. That said, I don't know how valid of a concern that is yet.

I don't think Hawaiian will have any problems fill seats going forward as the pilot group is small. I think there are about 15 foretasted retirements this year and just a bit of growth planned from a few more 330s.

It's less about the glamor than that it pays a bit more. For the captains there is about a $30K a year pay differential. Guys balance that out with the fact that they can be home every night and not have to deal with timezone shifting at all. Almost all the 717 captains fall into one of three categories. They are very junior and can only hold captain on the 717. They have young kids at home and want to be around all the time. Or, they are surfers and being on the 717 allows them to bid PMs, surf every morning and then go in to work later in the day.

Dead Fleet, aka Idle Fleet, aka Ghost Fleet on the James River near Ft Eustis, VA. Dense fog all over eastern Virginia this morning.

That's right on the final for PHF right? We used to buzz over the top of them going in there I think. Kind of creepy on a moonlit night.

So it's not actually "from the road" and I was off work today when I took this, but I'm really proud of my first true HDR shot. And it's got an airport in it, so I guess it's slightly aviation themed. This was taken from the second platform on Stairway to Heaven. That's Kaneohe Marine Base in the background.

Any chance you can put it on fb? My best friend lives in K Bay.

Thanks
