Apocalyptic event


Just knowing the chain of events that went down in order to make this picture happen is really cool.

I still remember when @Capt Bill had a different name and showed up to our forum and it was great to have someone with his background and experience that actually had the patience to sift through the cat photos and "ZOMG! Upgrade time at Comair?!" posts and provide patient insight and perspective.

And I still remember the recent Rutgers grad that showed up to NJC when we were in the double-wide that was the first on the scene offering to help and the last one at load out. The guy who called me in Brussels right after the Colgan crash and I tried to offer some advice which I was way out of my league to even begin offer -- Always the first to volunteer, maybe spit a morsel hamburger on your head, passionate about trying to make things better and had to have his phone pried from his hands on his wedding day as he was trying to help another pilot minutes before the music started.

So to many of us, this might be the "Smoke Monster" (*edit* - apparently the guy from "Lost" according to @Kristie, wasn't the Smoke Monster) and the "Wookiee", however to a lot of us that know these two guys, this picture represents the embodiment of what I believe our community is all about.

To me, this is a holiday family photo.

Capt Bill needs to teach the young padawan about razor sharp creases.... ;-) And who socked Seggy in the eye.....

In all seriousness, very cool pic and to see people moving up and flying with other JC members.....

I had a proud moment yesterday I'll share. Seggy was flying the leg and we had a young Regional FO up front with us. As we were talking about a variety of things I noticed he was carefully watching Seggy and noting his every move as Seggy makes it all look so simple and easy. We made our approach and landing and I could see out of the corner of my eye this young FO taking everything in and probably thinking "This guy is really good."

Seggy greased it on which has become the norm, and then
as cool as Clint Eastwood said, "you have the airplane Bill."

As we parked at the gate I felt like a proud father that had just witnessed his son graduating at the top of his class. Mark is a great pilot but even better, he is a great guy that has mastered humility, common sense, perspective and priorities.

In all seriousness, I'm likely learning far more from Seggy than he's learning from me.

As Doug alluded to, all the years of hard work and cultivation of talent on JC make these fun opportunities not only possible, but more probable as we progress in our careers.

Today's a down day, four legs tomorrow.

Hey, we had three plus hours of sit time in Florida which gave him plenty of time to go by the clinic, ice his eye, wrap his ribs and even grab some lunch. He should be better tomorrow so I might try another landing.... Really depends on how his injuries are healing up. I'll probably just have him fly tomorrow since the deductible on my medical hasn't been met for the year and I'm out of money. Tori is late again on her captain support check.

Nope. Tori won't let me park my truck in her garage. I may have to buy a place close by but then I'm afraid she will want to girl it all up with things that match and look good. I'm more about important things like sofas that won't absorb pizza sauce, coffee tables made out of giant wooden spools and close-out bedroom suites at Big Lots for $139.00.
She even hesitated to allow my Harleys indoors even though I promised to buy her a nice mop that would allow her to clean up the mess quickly and easily. She can be very difficult at times.

Whatever happens Mike, you are on the top of my "hang out with" list in Tucson.
 
So...who flew the first leg? How'd you decide?

It was important from the get-go to establish who was in charge, so, Seggy told me I could fly the first one if he got the next two. I'm not sure if he is going to give me a leg tomorrow (we have four), but I'll get his walk arounds and keep my fingers crossed. I'm not holding my breath though....
 
A great and memorable four day trip with Seggy is in the logbook. We had a little bit of everything thrown our way, but in the end, I feel very privileged having been able to share my passion, in a professional capacity, with a very close friend.

I STILL have my printed, framed post from CaptBill, which is from right around the time Seggy moved to AUS.

At the time, he wouldn't fly the 172 even when I offered.

I feel like its a karmic collision. Or something.

It was a most enjoyable four day trip and look forward to flying with@CaptBill again sooner rather than later. Bill is a great mentor and sets the example of how a professional should act. He does the little things such as making sure jumpseaters get on, thanks the ramp crew for a good push, gives the Flight Attendants good briefings, involves the First Officer, etc., that separates good Captains from excellent Captains. Thanks for everything Bill!

Also, as a side note, @Toria is quite lucky to have Bill as hers. I think she needs to buy him any toy he wants as a gesture of her appreciation towards him :).
