Behind the Southwest Airlines Culture

I'm not much of a betting man but...

I bet this thread will be in the lav in 8 posts.

I know most people here rave about Southwest's service, but I've never really been impressed. They've been average at best whenever I've flown them. Only had F/As joke around(the old cliche Southwest jokes, of course) on one of the flights I've taken, and the non-rev desk are a bunch of sneaky snakes. "More than 5 seats open, 4 non-revs". I'll think "Gee, I need a back up plan", only to find only 14 other people on the 737. I guess that's more than 5...shame on me? And after they reluctantly joined the "Flyzed" program, they decided to show a red frowning smiley(meaning full or oversold) on every single flight, open or not. Now that I have to buy tickets to travel, this year I flew SFO to PHX and LAS, and Southwest was $50-100 more expensive than United and Virgin America. Low fares my ass(you can totally say ass on here).

Not impressed at all with their shenanigans.

YMMV. My experience is pilots pushing wheel chairs on the pre-board, gate agents getting me on when I show up 10 minutes prior, and F/A's pleading to give me a water bottle when I head towards the back. Also, pilot's getting me on when the only seat was the jumpseat and they left me a seat in the back.

I've heard nothing but good things from commuting pilots. But as a garden variety "other airline" non-rev and revenue pax, I guess it's different. At least it has been for myself and my former coworkers at Skywest.

They switched from water cans?

I don't like southwest as a paying passenger, they remind me of Allegiant, but Allegiant actually has cheap prices for the no frills service. Southwest has gotten too expensive for the product they offer in my opinion.

I've had similar experiences Jumpseating and on paid tickets. I've even had seats blocked so I could have some elbow room. Spirit was also good to me and the wife Jumpseating. They blocked and entire row for us and my money was no good on the flight.

For those complaining about prices. Are you comparing apples to apples and adding the baggage fees etc into the "cheaper" price.

For Jumpseating though I have found UPS and FEDEX to be the best if you don't mind the sitting in the hub for a few hours.

Virgin America has treated me the best, most consistently, as a commuting pilot. Southwest DOES go above and beyond to make sure that if there's a seat you can take, you take it, which is or should be SOP everywhere.

When I would jumpseat they usually gave me crew water bottles.
Unlidded liquids up-front are a no-no. They've always given me cans, which I'll pound down instead of leaving open near all the avionics :(

For sure.

And there's no fare transparency - so the reality is Southwest can be just as (if not more) expensive than the legacy competition operating on the same route, and you'd better believe that Delta is going to be a more pleasant experience than the Herb Kelleher Clipper.
